6.4 vs 6.0 - Emissions, MPG?

I'm looking at two very similar F350s, an 07 with the 6L and an 08 with the 6.4L. Both just under 100k. I'm not afraid of the 6.0, even though my first one had just about all the known issues. I'm less afraid of an 07 than my old 04.

People say the 6.4 is more reliable, but I'm a little concerned it's the first year it came out. Are there any major issues I need to be aware of that the 6.0 didn't have? Does a 6.4 need head studs before you should make a lot of power?

Either truck will be getting a straight pipe and EGR delete. The 6.4 would also need a DPF delete. Is this just a matter of a pipe and a programmer for the DPF delete?

After the emissions crap is removed, is one truck going to get better mileage than the other?

The 6.4 can blow head gaskets, but usually putting down way more power than a 6.0 truck. A 6.4 on the biggest tunes is pushing almost 600 RWHP.
The 6.4 for sure will need a programmer before doing anything to it.

Neither of these beasts get any fuel economy awards that I know of.

6.4L esp in 08 had major radiator problems, some people are on their 3rd or 4th radiator, I have the original in my truck but its full of stop leak. 6.0 will get better mileage than the 6.4 unless you remove the emissions junk. I like my 6.4, would take it over a 6.0 anyday but the radiator issue is the worst thing about it. A new installed radiator from ford is way over a grand so that's something to keep in mind.

Mine is still the original radiator.

By the 2nd or 3rd radiator I'd be looking for other possible issues, but thats just me.
The thermostats can cause radiator failures, in fact that is what I believe to be the primary cause.

There is no way a radiator would blow up 3 or 5 times like some guys say, and then other trucks are fine on the original, it's obviously something else thats the problem.

Just my .02$.

I never replaced my radiator on my 08. My 08 was a job 3 truck. March 08 build date.

Was a great truck, put 86K of hard miles on it.

If you are leaving it stock then you don't need to stud it. Some run just a few more ponies and still are able to use the factory studs.

i agree with the radiator comments... I would also be looking for other issues.... I'm at 72k miles with original radiator no issues but I KEEP MY EYE'S on maintenance and try 2 look for problems before they occur. I still don't get the whole which truck gets better mpg's....neither one is going to be great.....the guys that claim big numbers are full of it... I deleted (mini maxx) aFe stage 2 intake and exhaust....proably gained 2mpg... roughly $2500 worth of upgrades... I'll never see that back.....but I knew that going in... I love THE POWER... imho....go with a 6.4 great trucks...if kept up with!

Personally I would stay with the 6.0. You are already familiar with it and it will get better fuel mileage than the 6.4. Unless you have lift to pull the cab on the 6.4.

Look at my album, I have owned 7.3's,6.0's,6.4's and 6.7's. I am just saying from experience not by word of mouth. He asked for opinions and that's what he got.
