460 or ?
Bought my truck and the owner said it has a balanced and blue printed 460 out of a 71 Crown Vic. Went to O'Rielly's and tried to get some stuff for it but 460 isn't and option on the 71 Crown Vic. Or the Marqui. At least not in O'Rielly's system. So I was going to get casting numbers off the block but, yeah, no casting numbers. The spot where they are supposed to be according to other pics and other posts is vertically right above the starter? They arent there. Just a little inset oval with three little ****. I looked everywhere else I can physically get without pulling the motor. What gives? The heads are stamped D3VE-A2A. Can anyone help? Is it even 460? It looks like one and its giant.

The guy said it has a "mild cam" in it. So it lobes a little bit. Once it is warmed up it runs ok but misses some. So i wanted to get new plugs wires and all the goodies to tune it up. The entire truck was frame off restored in 2000. The rebuilt B&B "460" was put in it then. It only has 3k on it. The truck sat in the showroom of a ford dealer for most of its life since its restore.

Ok Awesome. So, i can take the plug out, wooden dowel rod, mark the bottom and the top of the stroke? I have to turn the engine some how. Would i do that with a big wrench and turn the crank pulley some how? Sorry for the green questions I just havn't jumped this deep in an engine before..

If your strong a 1/2" breaker bar and deep well socket at the the front of the crankshaft .. If you want an easy go of it take out the plugs and inspect and clean them while your there or replace if needed .. The motor will turn much easier with them out .. You could also do a compression check too .. Just bring the motor up to normal operating temps before you do it with plugs out ..

Yeah. 4.59 is almost an inch bigger. He did say it was a blue printed engine. But I wasn't sure because he didn't have any documentation. But now it looks as though he may be right. It doesn't have any more "exceptional" power or torque than another stock 460 so I was curious. Anyway, I dont know how to test displacement to get the true size. I am going to assume it was bored also. I would like to know why they used stock 460 heads if they bored and stroked it.

Did you make sure the dowel rod didn't move on the top of the piston? Meaning the dowel rod stayed at the same angle. I'm thinking your measurements are off somehow according to this chart:
