Best turbo for engine rebuild? - Input Needed!
hey guys - i'm just recently back on the FTE wagon (or is it off? i guess depends on your perspective :-) ). you may have seen my diassembly thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ly-thread.html), and i plan to start a rebuild thread soon, but will probably break out smaller threads like this in hopes of keeping it organized.
so, my general plan for the rebuild is to get into the 350 hp range with stage 2 injectors, T500 pump, intercooler, head studs, TS chip and a bigger turbo. i am budget constrained, though (arent we all?), and the turbo seems like the only place where there is a significant delta in cost vs performance. (with the others, sure you can pay more than Rosewood, or Terminator, but you don't get much/any more performance, so why would you?).
i was previously planning on going really cheap and using a stock SD turbo (since i need new manifolds anyway) that i already have, but it seems that to avoid bad surge/flutter/whatever-you-want-to-call-it with stage 2's, i'd be spending close to $300-400 in a WickedWheel2 and WasteGate Master, not counting a hundred or so for up-pipes, and then another couple hundred (or fabbing) a spider.
Sooo, why not go with a S366 or something similar that i thought i remember can be had for $600 or so (or am i dreaming?). i'd then have to DIY the mount and up-pipe setup, as well as the spider, but it should be a much better set up overall with that sort of turbo, right? Plus, i can do alot of the fab work needed at work, pretty much just paying for materials and/or using scrap from work.
well, let me know what you guys think. and if you have any preferred vendors for this turbo (or similar). i'll have to dig up Bill's DIY turbo mount thread and maybe just start copying his parts list to figure on costs. if the turbo itself turns out to be closer to $1000 though, i'll have to consider sticking with the SD turbo for now...
as a little background, here's a thread a started a while ago on the SD forum to get some input from those guys on their turbo: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...obs-guy-3.html
edit: maybe not $600, but some quick googling brough me to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BorgWarner-A...-/300820496156. would this be something that would work well on our trucks with the setup proposed above, or would i be looking for a different A/R or something? Bill - is this the one you used? still liking/running it?
edit2: sorry, i can't help myself. would this work on my set-up: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HTT-BIG-BAD-...99306&vxp=mtr? looks like a SD turbo drop in, which i could swing. never heard of "Big Bad Wolf" turbo's before. ...i really hate that i know nothing about turbo's and can't seem to make sense of all the specs. feels like trying to read another language...

I don't think that last turbo is one you want. If you look up Bill's thread, I put a lot of measurements in there off of mine to kind of give him a good starting point on the S366. If you'd need anything else I'd do what I could to help you out with measurements, etc.
You don't need stage 2's for 350hp. I will bet any money I'm real close to 400 at the wheels with just stage ones. If you have all the supporting mods, you'll get there.
Good luck with your decision and build JP!

thanks Darin.
this is Bill's thread with the turbo DIY work in it, right? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ld-thread.html
its over 100 pages long, though!!! i'll have to click through it tonight to find the turbo stuff :-)

Thanks again, Darin. There sure was some epic BS'n in that thread. But there's no such thing as bad BS'n among friends!
As for the 350 hp stage 2's note of yours - I guess I should have been clearer. I don't really a set number, just looking to build a good cost effective system. And since Jim's stage 2's are the same price as all other complete rebuilds (right?) them why not put them in even if ip never do completely utilize them...

:-) that's the plan! I have a feeling that I'll learn real quick why people want to do live tuning! But from where I sit today, that seems like a fun problem to have...

ok, I went through some of Bill's epic "Big Red" thread and extracted out all the permalinks to pictures of the different stages of the build:
