no need for you to convert to roller, stick with flat-tappet..

Given the choice of the two engines you have, I would go with the 302. It's a lot less work in fact the kits available literally make it a bolt in conversion. Check out rangersstation and James duff for starters on this... There are lots of other resources available here as well.

It is way cheaper to source a good explorer engine that has everything you want than it would be to buy the conversion roller lifters. I think this is where the advise to just go with this comes from.

If you want to make your money bad, stick those engines back on craigslist and go to pick n pull to get the right engine.

there's a couple different ways you can go about the upgrade, you can buy bare heads starting at $400 apiece without the hardware then add valves studs springs etc later or you can buy fully assembled head starting at $560 per head.
If it was my 351 windsor we were building i would choose a cylinder head with 180cc intake ports, opinions may vary but that's mine.

Look up "The Ranger Station" and/or "Ranger Power Sports" and you'll get the two top Ranger V8 swap forums on the Net. Not going to try to provide a link here, it'll just get deleted by someone "higher up"

351 heads are nearly identical to 302 heads so your headers, everything external should bolt right up. Certain 351 heads are better than 302 heads. Later models they had the same head essentially, the biggest difference being the 351 uses 1/2 head bolts. You can get bolts with a shoulder, some folks just use the stock head 7/16 bolts.

302/351W heads ? Everything's the same as far as the exhaust goes. Just don't pay out the wa-zoo for 351W heads unless you know what you're looking at. After about 1976, both used the same heads, with the lone exception of the larger diameter head bolt holes.

I just read the original post again, 68 302 vs 83 351, the 68 heads win hands down. From 76 or 77 until 87 or so stock small block heads were horrible.
