No reason really. MP3 (now MP4) is a digital music format for a flash memory stick or player like an Ipod. CDs are antiquated and have been on there way out for a while now. I have an aftermarket Sony head unit in my truck and plug usb thumb drive right into the head unit. So I carry around a couple $10 thunk drives vs a hundred CDs. If the thumb drive gets stolen it doesn't matter, I just put my music on another one.

Hope this doesn't hijack the thread, but I've wondered about getting one of those external usb laptop drives and putting like 1T of music on it. I was told once that the head unit wouldn't be able to "see" the drive. Anyone know if that would work?

The larger external hard drives will work on my aftermarket head unit. I don't know about the Ford head units though. You can get usb thumb drive in 64gb now for a decent price and that is usually enough for most people.

The thing about hard drives is that they don't like extreme vibration. The newer ones are better at handling it, but living in a Super Duty, I guarantee their life will be drastically shortened. A Solid State Drive (SSD) would be the ticket though.

But like dkf said- you can get a 64gb thumb drive or two- should be plenty of space until head unit makers wake up and start supporting FLAC files. Then, we'll need some massive space.

1 terrabyte of music is one helluva lot of music!!!
Ad someone else stated, one of the larger memory sticks would be the way to go.

Also don't forget that some head-uints will play
the MP3s off the CD. So you can get quite a bit
more out of that stack of CDs that you got when
CompUSA went belly-up so many years ago.

AND Yes I still have a few stacks.
