Alternator - What AMP to buy?

I am in need of a replacement alternator for my truck and the question is: Do I just buy the stock 110 amp unit or should I get a larger amp unit. I was thinking buying from DB Electric. Any help would be appreciated.

All depends on what your power needs are for the most part. Stock is good for most but if you run additional radios, winch, lights..etc, you may need a few more amps for running these things at idle.

A lot of guys use what they call a 3G alt. Not sure what all that is or if your computer
controlled truck would be okay with it. As it's a diesel I think it would be fine. But let
the guys that really know chime in. Rule of thumb I have heard all my life is "The
Bigger The Better". Not sure they was talkin alts though.

The most I have on my truck is the stereo system. I have 2 amps which I believe are 500w each and HID lights. The people at DB stated that I should be fine with a stock unit. I have no light dimming or nor the truck shuts off while on idle. Right now my original unit that came new with truck is putting out 11.7-12.00 and I believe it should be at 13-13.5. My batteries are brand new.

Last fall I installed a 140 amp 6.0 alternator, and no problems as of yet.

You don't want to get carried away and get something too large or you will need to change other components besides just the alternator. I still have my stock alt and I have HAM radio, Scanner, winch/compressor and I don't have an issue and I am still showing 13.8-14 while running. When it comes time to change mine, I will most likely go with another stock alt and go with it.

I went to a larger alt because I run an electric motor driven hydraulic powered snow plow in the winter months. It has been on there for about two years with no issues. Mine is a Prestolite that is 130 amp at idle and if I remember correctly up to 220 amps based on draw.

There is a fellow FTEr on here some where that installed a 6.0 alternator on his 7.3 also. Flip the rear of the case 180 and bolt it right up. Planning on doing this to my truck as soon as mine takes a dump. Plowing is hard on my alternators so I carry a spare in the truck all the time.

What gains or the purpose of using a 6.0 unit instead of a 7.3?

The 6.0 alt is 140 amps versus 110 for the stock 7.3

What year 6.0 would you use and would it work with stock 7.3 wiring?
