a few questions

Hello Guys,

i just recently purchased a 2003 F-150 SuperCrew 4x4, 5.4L, 3.73LS rear.

my questions are:

what brand/type of transfer case does it have/use?

why did it come with the 3.73 rear-end, since i've noticed in this forum that most of the '02s came with the 3.55?

what brand/type and gear ratios are in the front axle?

can the bed extender be taken out without opening the tailgate?

thanks for any answers you might help me with guys.

What ever gear ratio that is in the rear is also in the front. The front axle should be an 8.8" and the rear is probably a 9.75".
As far as the ratio, It is just how the truck was ordered by the dealer. I kinda wish I had the 3.73 instead of 3.55's but they will do fine. If you tow anything , the 3.73 will give you better acceleration. The gas mileage difference will be minimal.

Hi Robert and welcome to FTE

Your transfer case is a Borg-Warner 44-06. They are usually a good reliable piece.
I think you got lucky that the truck was ordered with 3.73s
I dont think you can remove the bed extender without opening the tailgate but i could be wrong.

As for the higher gear ratio........usually vehicles with standard transmissions are geared lower (numerically higher).....are you sure that your comparison is based on vehicles with the same tranny?

3.55 is the most common. The dealer that I bought my truck from orders all of there trucks with Limited Slip. I guess he knows what people really want!!

hey Jeremy... i do know that mine came with the 3.73 LS, however, the comparison i'm making is looking at most of the sig lines that show 2000-2002's with 3.55's. as far as same trannies, i guess you're right, i am assuming that most are automatics...since i don't think you can get a manual on the 5.4 and 4.6's, only on the 4.2...right?

The bed extender if properly installed cannot be removed with the tailgate closed. Make sure when you install you install it with tail gate open and the extendender in the open position. Then Flip it over and close and lock the tailgate then you will not be able to get it off without opening the tailgate. If installed the other way it comes out very easily for fast removal for anyone who wants it.

hey OSFPCS, congrats on your new truck...i just got mine also. so what's the difference between installing it one way or the other? is it because the "clips" face down when you install it with the tailgate open? thanks for answering the question.

If you install it with the tailgate closed it can be removed with the tailgate closed. I also placed reflective tape on the flip out bars so when I have it extended the idiots behind me at night and during the day get a better view of it extended.
