Replacing transmission.

Replacing transmission.
Ok got the word from the dealership today that my transmission is toast and need to be replaced. After I picked my jaw up off the floor from the quote I got ($5000 to $7000 all in), I'm wondering what a new tranny should cost me in the real world (outside of the dealership). Can anyone give me an idea? Plan is to call a couple shops over the next few days but I don't want to go in without a clue.
thanks

Waiting to hear back from Ford Financing to see if they can put us into a new truck.

They are trying to tell me its been running without fluid for a while and has burned up all the insides (funny considering it gets in for regular servicing at the dealership). I'm already into it for over $1000 just to have them look at it (7hrs @$150 per hour) and then they want $5000 for the tranny and more labour and parts on top of that, in the end probably well over $7000, hard to justify on a vehicle that might get $5000 on a trade-in.

how much did they give you for a truck that needed $7000 worth of work ?

actually it was a different dealership, they covered the outstanding balance, plus a little extra, and took very good care of us. Will not return to the original dealership ever again, second dealership couldn't believe that the sales dept. never even tried to contact me, oh well their loss.
