I like my generator....how do I polarize it?

 

With the engine off, at the regulator, remove the field (F) wire and briefly touch it to the batt (B) connection. You should see a small bluish spark. Re-connect the field wire and you're done.

 

OK, polarized it, swapped wires, started engine, gauges still working properly.

jacnat, just do what Doc suggests in the post before mine.....permalink 62....takes 10 minutes to find the screwdriver and 1 minute to do the job

 

Shouldn't that be an ammeter? Unless someone changed the gauges. The back of the gauge has no connections (see picture) rather it picks up on the magnetic field created when the circuit is on. The front of the gauge should say battery. with charge and discharge markings.

What do the rest of the gauges do when the engine is running?

 

OP really needs to pull off the coil, voltage regulator, and wiper motor, to determine if there are any voltage markings on them.

There's no ballast resistor, no gauge voltage reducer, just the one 12v light bulb and a 12v battery thrown in to get it sold. I think this is a 6v truck with 2 incorrect parts.

If a 12v truck is desired in the end, then a step-by-step conversion should be done AFTER replacing the bad wiring.
