03 7.3 diesel wont shift out of park

2003 7.3 powerstroke wont shift out of park when running. When my plugs are warming I have to shift into neutral then start truck. works just fine after that unless I go in to park again. Brake lights work just fine. So im guessing brake light switch is fine. What's next to check?

The brake light switch is two part: one is for the lights, the other is for signalling that the pedal has been pressed.

You need to check the second half of the switch. If you have cruise that works, (SAFELY) check to see if it disengages by tapping the brake pedal. If not, then that switch circuit is the problem.

Just ran up and down the road to see if i could get cruise to disengage by tapping the brakes, it will. Whats next to go on to?

Well, that's all the easy stuff. Next, you'll have to get in there to the shift interlock and make some measurements to see if the problem is in the lock unit or in the wiring of the vehicle.
