"DEF range 500 miles" pop up
#16
Mine was not full from dealer.I got my edge cts the same week I got the truck and saw the 50% marker on it.Even though I asked if they topped off the def and they said yes.Cant ever trust those slimeballs.Give them the benefit of dought and get kicked in the nuts everytime. So they def do not top off the def as an earlier post suggests.

I bought my first jug from the Ford dealer to get the spout their jugs come with. It has a shut-off feature when the tank is full. Since then I buy jugs from WallMart.

update
I guess the DEF 500 mile notice I got yesterday was a false reading or something... This morning when I started it up, no msg...so I went to sys check-exhaust fluid level, OK...so just to be sure I bought a 2.5gal jug and filled tank...it took appx 2 gals to fill. So I don't know what was going on with the msg.

DEF usage varies greatly depending on the load and a number of other variables.
I tow a LOT and get around 4600 miles on a fill.
And they don't come from the factory filled and dealers are very lax on filling them before delivery.
My 500 to empty came on last night and I went another 200 miles before buying some at a flying J, only bought $10 worth, 3.6 gallons, stupid truck put the 500 miles to empty message back on after that and it took two more restart cycles over the next 100 miles before that message went away.

I know that's a normal msg, but what has me thinking is the fact I've had my truck just over 2 weeks and it only has 1350 miles on it. My understanding is that a tank of DEF should last at least 5000 miles (service interval), which means either my delivery prep guys overlooked filling it or it using way more DEF than it should. My guess would be the first thought. Lol
My 2011 DRW had the issue it of the factory not filling it. The warning light came on at 1500 miles. added 3.5gls. Normally it would light up at 800 remaining to 500mile remaining it would start to count down.

So far, I have never let mine get below 1/2 warning. Like others here, I top it off whenever I get to a truck stop that has it at the pump. Mainly, because it is $2.79/gal in bulk and the early 2011 had a problem of not resetting even after a full top off once the countdown hit. Supposedly that was fixed with an update, but I don't want to tempt fate. I also keep the 2 free jugs of DEF the dealer gave me when I bought my 2011 full. For some odd reason I seem to get between 800-1000 miles per gal. and I need to refill before an oil change.
If you run biodiesel it uses more DEF than non-bio blend fuels - I do notice that when I run B20 it is when it is closer to the 800 mile/gal. I don't pull, just haul, so I can't comment on use while pulling.
Things must be different now, because the trucks used to come without the DEF tanks being full. My question would be, I'll buy the 2.5 jug from you and start to dump it in my tank, if it takes more than a 1/2 gal than the jug is free...

Had 2500 miles on 6.7l and PCM was replaced
Had 2500 on my truck and check engine light came on, took it to the dealer and they told me it was a nox sensor, waited for parts and it was replaced. Check engine light did not turn off, they reset it and drive off, 20 miles later light came back on. Took it back and also truck lost its acceleration. They told me it needed to be re flashed. It sat for 4 days and then the tech told me that the 2014 diesels are different from the 2013's as they do not take the same re-flashing to fix some issues. They replaced the wiring as per tsb per ford at the def pump. Drive truck 50 miles and then check engine light back on and now 50 miles until 50mph message came up for def. went to refill def and tank was full. Then after 50 miles said 50mph upon restart. Then engine idle message came on. Had ford tow it, it lasted 2 weeks in the shop and they had to get a ford rep from who knows where to come out to El Paso Texas because the service techs were stumped and "yes" the only way they got the engine idle process to clear is by replacing the PCM and that was per ford's rep from the factory. We have 3 other trucks that we just purchased for our company and the 2nd out of the 3 is starting to act up now. Hope this helps
