Need advice. 1994 5.8 SD rebuild

I will need to rebuild my engine soon in the truck in my sig. What I'm wondering is if I do the following will it mess up my SD system too much? I simply want a good solid rebuild without messing with the SD system. I'm not very computer literate so changing to MAF is beyond my abilities.

Here is what I'm thinking of doing

GT40 heads or maybe an aftermarket head like an Edelbrock or something
1.7 rollers with Crane 444232 cam
Edelbrock Performer or Professional Products Typhoon lower intake
Pacesetter longtube headers with a Random Technologies Super Flow Catalytic Converter and a Magnaflow muffler. My exhaust will be mandrel bent and will likely be a 2 1/2" Y pipe going into a 3" exhaust.

Any help or advice will be appreciated, thank you.

Anyone? I want to ensure my build is OK with an SD system.

Yeah that will work, only thing is you will need the complete Typhoon or Performer intake system(upper and lower).

Thank you Conanski. I appreciate the reply. I will start to collect parts over the winter.

What models and years do the GT40 heads come off of?

Once again thank you for the reply. I only have one more question as I simply didn't think of it earlier. Can I use standard size pushrods for the 5.8 with the GT40 heads?

Oops, I meant standard length pushrods.

Thank you again.

If you have an F4TE block then a roller cam conversion would be a good upgrade. You can get the spider, roller lifters and dogbones from any rollerized 5.0 or 5.8; the used sets I've purchased in the past have all been under 100 bucks.

Look into getting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and an in cab fuel pressure gauge as well because it will likely run lean at higher RPM's, under heavy throttle conditions.

I thought the block designation F4TE meant I already had a roller cam?

Yes actually your motor should already have a roller cam.. I must have been snoozing not to have noticed that earlier. So if that is the case don't go backwords to a flat tappet cam, instead get the Mustang HO roller cam or maybe this one.. http://www.summitracing.com/int/part...view/make/ford

Thank you Conanski. So the Lunati cam you suggest would be more compatible than the Crane 444232 or the Comp Cam 35-255-5 with my 5.8 SD system? I got the cam numbers from reading about cams on FTE so I'm not sure of the choices.

Also, can I use standard length pushrods with the GT40 heads and the suggested cams or do I need to order different ones.

The Crane 444232 and Comp 35-255-5 are both flat tappet cams which means you would need matching flat tappet lifters and pushrods. Flat tappet lifters are shorter than roller lifters so flat tappet pushrods are longer. The heads will have no impact on the pushrods needed unless they were machined.

Ah, OK. In all the reading I've been doing I never picked up that the Crane and Comp cams I listed were for flat tappet cams. Once again, thank you for the information.

I'm going to the JY today to see what they have in the way of Mustangs, explorers etc. to look for the GT40 heads.

Cheers

Not necessarily. Being that it's speed density would lead me to believe that it doesn't have a roller cam. You can pull a valve cover and look through the head where the pushrods are. If you see a piece that resembles a dogbone, between the lifters, then you have a roller cam in it.

I was reading in another post about someone wanting to rebuild a 302 (5.0 L) and Conanski said, in part (One good thing about this motor is it already wears a really good intake so there is something you won't need to upgrade)

Can I use the 302 upper and lower intakes from a 5.0 L for my 5.8? If so, would it be an upgrade from my current intakes? My local JY has two or three of them still in the truck so some time at the JY and a few dollars works for me if it's advisable.

The lower intake will not exchange between the two engines. The intake valley of the 5.8 is about 1.5" wider than the 5.0.

There have been discussions about mixing different upper intakes with the wider lower intake, but I don't remember what works.
