5.4 Rear Crank Seal/Oil Slinger

I'm rebuilding my '99 Expy 5.4 and have a question about the Rear Seal (P/N 6701) and the Oil Slinger (P/N 6310 aka dust guard) WITH a retainer plate. I have the service manual and a Chilton's book...neither of them give any details on how to install these parts. They just say "use the special tools".

I don't have the fancy install tools. When installing the seal, do you drive the seal into the retainer plate so that it is flush with the inside edge of the plate? The slinger/dust guard goes in behind the seal. Should the face of the slinger be flush with the outside edge of the retainer plate or slightly recessed into the retainer plate?

Thank you for your help!

Install the seal first with plenty of vaseline and use a plastic card to keep the lip from rolling over. The seal sets in the plate about 3/16" and the slinger installs onto the crank flush with the edge of the plate. Be careful to install the seal square into the plate.

Forgot to tell you to pack the inside of the seal with vaseline to keep the spring from getting dislodged.
