M5r2 Questions,
hey guys,
we are planing on putting that m5r2 transmission in,since that the tranny in there now has a stupid tall first gear,
the big question is about the speedo, the one we got as the electric speedo hookup.
now i read on other threads and sites, that these transmission came with both.im wonder how do you tell if i have this kind of a setup or a different setup.
also, would the clutch, pressure plate and flywheel be the same.i would think it would.am i correct?
thanks of the help, this forum has help us alot.and i thank yall for this.
will keep this thread updated as we go forward

If you know what year the tranny is you have, you can look up the clutch parts for your truck on a online parts site, and then look up the same parts for the truck with the same engine and the 5 speed and see what has the same part numbers.
Usually when you read this tranny had "both" options, that means through the years it had a mechanical speedo and then later they changed it to the electronic versions. I am assuming you have a 2wd truck? If you have a 4wd truck and bought a 4wd 5 speed, it won't matter, the speedo comes out of the transfer case.
In some cases you can find the proper parts for a electronic speedo tranny and convert it over. Usually a tailshaft swap and mounting the gear on the shaft.

Some of these trans used an electric sensor that mounts in the side of the tailshaft housing. If this is what yours has, then pull it out, and stick the speedo cable drive unit in it's place. Just be aware that if the speedo drive hole is on the opposite side of the trans, you will need a different gear for it. The teeth are cut in different directions, for different sides.

I have a speedometer which came out of a later moder F600 [I believe], which looks like the speedometer in my 1986 F150, but is electronic and possibly registers a maximum of 75 MPH [been awhile since I looked at it]. It is electronic and the odometer goes to 999,999.9.
Is there anyway one like this could be used in a situation like RadioControGuy85 finds himself in? Just thinking outside the box.

Yes, but some of those transmissions still had a speed sensor in the trans that was used for other functions in the ECU. This speed sensor was stuck in the former speedo drive hole.

so the fix would be getting a pre 92 tail housing???
would i need to swap out the speedo gear? if so, how would i figure out what gear would i need?
could i take the gear out the old tranmission and put that speedo gear in the m5r2 tranny?
also,is there anyway to tell if the tranmission good? the guy said it was good.but i would like to make sure.
