Chrysler finds a hit in small diesel for Ram, Jeep

 

Dealers bought them for stock. I will bet most are still sitting on dealer lots. I have seen 0 of them in my area. Thus I don't put much into the assumptions made in the article.

It better get super good mpg because I think if the people whom buy them have any sense they will ask themselves why they paid the almost $3k extra for an engine that will be outran by a base 3.7l V6 in an F-150. It gets smoked by the 5.7l, 5.0l, 3.5l EB and etc.

 

Well you should know how people are. Its new, its a a diesel, Most people don't drag race them so not being as fast is something that only the younger buyer think about.
Talking to guys my age that have had or drive many different truck (IE: guys that work for the phone companies, & larger companies or government) most tell me the Dodge is a very good truck in design. They enjoy driving them. Not one has said that a Ford or Chevy were faster or pulled more.

Anyway since there has been talk on here about the new Dodge diesel I thought I would share the latest article on it I have found.

I just cringe at the thought pulling a 5k+ lb trailer in a rather heavy truck onto traffic going 70mph with 240hp. That 240hp was good two decades ago but nothing to brag about these days. The RAM trucks have made a pretty big leap over the last few years compared to what they were.(primarily the 1/2 tons)

My buddy has a 94 1 ton Dodge with a Cummins & it only makes 160hp. With a two axle car trailer a good heavy duty slide one. He pulled my F150 4x4 on that trailer up a 7% grade 10 miles long in overdrive 7 miles & in direct the last 3 miles @ 40 mph. This is a windy road. Hwy 160 from Las Vegas to Pahrump. We picked up my Crown Vic P71 in Northern Nevada & hauled it with the same trailer 275 miles with no effort & got 17 mpg. @ 65 mph the speed he choose to drive. No doubt it would of pulled it @80 mph.
A diesel isn't about HP as much as torque.
If you look at the Wall Street Cheat Sheet online the new Dodge Ram 1500 is one of the top 40, in top end speeds with a top end like 128 mph. this was gas though. Fords had two vehicles the Mustang & Focus ST.

 

In the 2015 F-150 forum, there is a video of the 2.7L ecoboost towing against the GM and the Ram ecodiesel up Davis Dam.

The Ram was running a 3.92.1 axle while the Ford was using it's max tow axle, 3.73.1.

The ecoboost according to the video smoked the ecodiesel but I gotta say this, at 240 HP, the Ram did the job and when not towing, it will provide exceptional MPG's.

While many users on FTE complain that there is no diesel for us, 240HP and 440 ft/lb of torque and nearly 30 MPG's empty doesn't interest them.

What I don't get is drag racing up Union Pass or any other pass towing a trailer. What does that really prove? I live at the bottom of Union Pass. It is a 12 mile climb from 500 ft to 3500 ft. Some of it is not as steep as other areas of it. I drive Union Pass quiet often.

I was HOME in Maine last month. When I go anywhere I always keep a mental note of what people tend to drive.

Very very few personal use diesels of any kind and not one ecoboost in any platform was seen in the week that I was home.

 

I see a lot of Dodge & Fords out here. Nobody here can get the Dodge 1500 diesels. The dealers have waiting lists. Talked to a dealer in Southern Nevada & he said he can sell all he can get but is having trouble getting them.
So it is like everything else we hear about. you hear or read one thing, but what you really see is different. Gee nothing new. So what is the truth????

I know Chrysler sells a lot (50+%?) of diesel Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers to Europe and other places where fuel is $8-10/gallon and MPG is King... they used to be about 80 HP and really weak, but now have a 4-banger turbodiesel that feels almost like a Hemi under the hood once it hits 1500 RPMs and spools up the turbo boost... revs out strong to 4500 (redline on tach @ 4K?)... they aren't offered in the USA except briefly about 2006-2007... since starting/glowplugs are computer controlled now, most people don't realize they jumped in a diesel unless look at tach with 5K max numbers instead of 7K in gas models...
