whats the point in a V10?
I put low miles on my trucks. Therefore, I don't care much about mileage.
I don't know much about diesels, but I've been told they should be run regularly for best results. My understanding is that for intermittent use, a gasser would be better.
I think diesels smell bad. I do think they sound cool, but if I had to listen to one all the time, I would likely get tired of it.
Diesel fuel costs more than gas, at least at present.
Diesels cost more to maintain. Diesels cost more to buy.
And that's why I got a V-10.

When I was shopping for my current 'X', I compared the cost of the 2.
It would have taken about 50 months to break even on the extra cost of the PSD. And at the time gas was $.10 more a gallon. This was at 28K miles per year.
I did want a PSD just could not afford the extra $ 5000.00
this did not include any of the higher $ maint. items (filters and such)

Ahh two of my favorite misconceptions about the PSD:
1) better MPG = lower cost
Research on the PSD MPG issue reveals that only a handful are getting substantially better economy than the V10. On average, the PSD seems to only get about 2MPG better both empty and towing. This small economy is quickly offset by the cost of maintenance.
2) better towing power
According to Ford's ratings, the V10 can pull just as much as the PSD. In some configurations of the F250, the V10 is actually rated to pull MORE than the diesel simply because the PSD weighs so much more than the gas engines.
I like the PSD. If I were towing a lot or drove many miles, you can bet I'd own one.

whats the point in a V10?
Darn it! I missed it! My favorite subject, too! Ya'll have great answers that I cannot really add to. But I do have another reason for choosing (or keeping, as you'll see) a V10, at least for me anyhow.
The temptation to modify the PSD is stronger and easier/cheaper to fulfill that with the V10.
If this temptation is not controlled, it could mean that I'm either sleeping inside with my wife or outside with the dog. I like sleeping with my wife (we have 4 kids ), so I choose the V10.
(Actually the truck I found had the V10, the reason above was actually my reasoning for learning to love my V10. )

whats the point in a V10?
Whats the point in a V-10 is a good question. You already got all the answers I can think of posted above. For the driving I do and the uses for a truck that I have the V-10 is my choice. What amazes me is that here in Colorado the PSD outnumbers the V-10 by probably 10 to 1. I realize that the turbo is sweet over the high summits but alot of guys I see are not even pulling any weight. It must be a "got to have it" syndrome for the guys that drive around empty. Or the rumors of fantastic mileage out of the diesels. Short stroy. I was hip deep fishing the North Platte river out of Casper Wyo next to a guy with a V-10 in the lot. He loves the truck but told me he heard of guys getting 25 to 30 mpg with the PSD. I almost went for a swim. Told him about this web site and that those numbers even top the estimates in the Diesel forum. Anyway, not to rip the Diesel guys, all the tractor-trailer rigs are diesels so if you use them for high mileage heavy use they are the best choice. If you are guy with part-time camper/boat use its a personal choice IMO. Gald we have choices!

Not to put down PSD's, but nobody's brought up this point. Buddy of mine has diesel F350 - keeps it garaged. He warms up for about 30 seconds before driving out. Even though Powerstroke is a "clean" running diesel, everything in his garage has fine coating of soot on it. I prefer gassers.

whats the point in a V10?
I know what the point is for me. I've had a 6.9 Ford diesel that I put an ATS turbo on, a 1993 IDI 7.3 diesel in a 1 ton crew cab 4X4, a 95 PSD in a supercab 4X4 so I know and love the Cornbinder diesel. Why I went with the V-10 is the same reson I LOVED my 1970 429 Couger Eliminator. Cause when I stand on it, she goes like a STRIPED A$$ APE. There aint NO comparing a big cube gas motor !! 430 ft pounds of torque AND 300+ horsepower !! THAT'S WHY !!

>Ya know, I shouldn't laugh but it was damn funny!!
Knowing your sense of humor I thought you'd get a kick outta it.
EVERY F450 and van based rescue in this town is a PSD. After 24 hour shifts with these vibrating, smelly noise makers I can't wait to start my V10 when it's time to go home.
Last year there was 0% on Excursions and around $8000 off sticker. Even with the Excursion being a few thousand more than my -$2000 invoice deal on my Crew Cab the payments were very close. The wife and I drove a diesel Limited and at 75mph on a 15 mile test drive the wife starts getting nauseas(sp?)and almost throws up. I'll stick with the smooth power of a gasser for personal use, thank-you.
