In my semi-redneck past we sat around and listened to the "I'll pull your truck around the block" stories, so we did it. I recommend a 30,000 rated tow strap, then put it into your receiver hitch with the hitch pin holding the loop.

It is all about traction and how you apply the throttle. Break loose and you'll spin and go backwards, or get axle hop.

You can chip a 7.3 with 80-120hp, I did it. You do need intake, exhaust and the tranny will blow if it's not built (mine did). DP tuner makes the best 7.3 tune. The chip mostly ramps up the boost and injector cycle/pressure. Stock tune is very conserative. But then you still have a 7.3 with maybe 600 ft/lbs and 325hp. Nothing like a new 6.7....

The only solution is to "hook 'em up" and see who pulls who around the block.

[quote=mecdac;14488483]Old bull and a young bull standing on a bluff overlooking a herd of cows.

Young Bull says, "Why don't we run down there and have our way with one of them cows?"

Old Bull says, "Why don't we walk down there and have our way with all of them cows!"

HA i love this quote, i remember the first time i heard this from a old guy at my gun club years back.....

Stupid, pointless test that's all based on traction, not power or torque. You have a better truck. Nothing good can come from proving it this way, you will only do damage. It's not worth the price to protect your pride.

Not to mention, do damage to a truck that is worth a heck of a lot more than the one the other guy has. Breaking something on a 20 year old truck that is cheap to fix makes it easier to throw down challenges like that and not risk losing much.

There's more to it than power as many have mentioned. There's also the safety issue. Imagine that strap snapping and flying through the back windshield or hitting a bystander?

Most everyone here has already said what was important. Doing this kind of thing is always a bad idea. I'd never do it in a vehicle that I cared a lot about.

As far as your hitch goes, higher is better. If the tow strap is going down towards his truck, the force on the strap will put downforce on your truck. This will give you a traction advantage.

My opinion would be LR, simply because transmissions are expensive.

I'm a big fan of the 7.3 motors, and I love my gen 9 truck more than any vehicle I've ever owned, but If I was about to watch you pull of with that 95, my money would be on you. Your e-locker and weight give you a big advantage. I was joking about doing a pull-off with a guy at work who brought in a built K5 blazer with a 454 on 44's. Both vehicles weigh 6600 lbs, but that blazer had front & rear lockers, it would have been no contest.

There's a youtube vid of some kid w/a 4 cyl cummins converted Hummer pulling an F350 across a parking lot. SD loses traction, wheel hop, busted driveshaft I believe. The SD pulled him a couple times and the camera guy kept screaming "stop, stop, stop!".

Hummer finally gets things his way and pulls the SD, and the kid (you'd have thought he just won the super bowl single handedly or something) gets in the camera screaming about his 4-cyl cummins and how powerstroke america can suck it.

Looked to be a stock SD and the Hummer had about a 1/2 mile of lift and big honkin tires. EVerything about the pull was stacked against the SD, but man was that kid stoked. I told him to relax before he popped a vein and stroked out, but he didn't see the humor.

He just couldn't understand that "outpulling" a truck in a parking lot did not equate to having more muscle. The fact that the SD had literally 3 times the HP and torque didn't figure in to his equations.

Anyway, my all-time favorite pulling contest is the one where a couple of Billy Bobs and their home made monster trucks have a little backyard contest, and the Ford LITERALLY rips the Chevy in half. Much screaming ensued, but the hilarity was endless.

This one is my favorite:

Say what you want about engines, two Cummins weigh more, have more power, and more traction than one powerstroke. They still lost!

My last truck was a '95 7.3, and I spent a considerable amount of time and money trying to maximize the power output. I had that truck on a dyno on several occasions, and can tell you that any "chip" can not increase power beyond what the fuel system can support.
