Amother Good Trip....

Hey Everyone,

Well we had another good trip with the old 6.0, pulled the 5er right about 500 miles through NY, NJ, DE, and then to Ocean City. Truck seemed to run pretty good, I was pushing the old girl pretty hard, and she did well. I managed to squeak out 13mpg, that was running between 72-76 mph so Im happy with that.

We hit traffic and lots of it just outside OC and it took us about 2 hours to go 5 miles, pulled in the campgrounds and the truck was running a little rough so I figure the EGR may be a little sooty, so I will stretch her legs a little tomorrow and clean it out. No CEL and no codes are stored so I think all is well. I will surely clean it out on the way home that's for sure.

So as I write this Im thinking, I was going to pull the heads and stud the truck this winter, but Im wondering if I should...if it aint broke why fix it. I know everyone will say its a ticking time bomb but, Ive been running ths truck in its current state for 3 years and never a drop or hint of coolant out the cap...yes Im knocking on wood as we speak.

So here are some of my temps:

ECT & EOT Delta stayed right about 5*
EGT's were running between 900-1000* and they peaked at 1200* pulling some steep grades.
Tranny Temp stayed around 155-164, and shifting seemed fine.

Other than that, not much else to report here. If anyone is in the area, look me up and stop by for a cold pop....FYI by far the most prevalent truck in the camp grounds here are Super Dutys.

Sarge261 that's good to here that your trip went pretty well. Sense I bought this truck in Oct of 2013, this trip that we r going on will be our first long trip to Franklin,NC. I hope that it will be a nice trip until we get to our campground. So once again have a safe journey back to the north country......

Just came back from a trip hauling my race car trailer almost 500 miles and averaged 13.2 mpg running mostly 65-70.
With 125k miles on her I could not be happier...

I think that's great Andy. I personally wouldn't put a wrench on it unless you just absolutely had to. Running that well, why would you?

Tim,

I hear ya, I may upgrade the tranny first since it did have a few "odd" shifts plus I guess it would be piece of mind for me since I think that may be the weak link at this point.

Then again, I may just reset the KAM and relearn the trans again and see if that helps.

I hope everyone that is road tripping with the 6.0 has as much success as I did.

If you were running stock, I'd agree to leave it alone -- injectors/turbo & tuned? I'd take the potential problem out of the equation before it happens in the middle of a trip, which always, always sucks big time.

Why not throw the '08 Trans Pan and filter on it and put the LV fluid in (people argue both ways on this, but I believe the LV is better myself). Parts for the upgrade are just over a hundred bucks at tousleys and it takes an hour or so even if you shoot some picts... (and you can then say you have the "new" Ford DEEP SUMP trans pan Well, it in fact is deeper, just a touch...

I vote leave it too. If it's running good, let it be.

I would leave it alone too.

Congrats on the great trip. I just finished one too, my 6.0 ran flawless. It was about 97° ambient out and cruised home with the A/C cranked. Oil temp crested at 230° with a max temp diff of 9°.

Needless to say, I had a huge grin on my face, and I completely love my truck.

Oh and its hard to believe I picked her up brand new 9 years ago today.

Congrats Sarge
I only get 10.5-11 mpg pulling the 5'er (iam a 5 over the speed limit guy) so your doing great & BTW i'd leave that motor alone as well. I have quite a few power upgrades myself (including the dreaded Tuner) all while still on OE TTY Bolt's & it's been about 3 years now running like this with NO hiccups......Just keep doing what your doing

I bought studs for my 06 about 4 years ago and never used them. I'll be using them in the next couple of days... the engine burned 4 pistons and had to have a sleeve and a 30 overbore, but the head gaskets came out looking excellent. And they had a couple of months of a blown egr cooler on them as well as bad injectors and other stuff. It had 230,000 miles when it croaked. If your truck is newer, I don't know if i would do it, they seem to hold up pretty good.

My truck is an 06 also but I just turned 73k on this trip, when all said and done I will have right around 73,500 on it when I get back home.

I already have a Maghytech trans pan on it so I have no plans to change it. I did a service just before I left, changed both filters and refilled with SP, I have 2 cases left so when that's gone I will switch it over.
