First oil change

Ok, it's my first time giving my truck an oil change. I it's a 2014 super duty and it's got 7,000 miles on it. My friend advice me to use regular oil because it's cheaper and also because he heard that diesels don't need synthetic oil. What do you guys think and also what brand?

Regular oil??? You mean as in a non-diesel spec oil that isn't recommended by ford? Quit listening to that guy.

Your owners manual tells you what spec oil to use for the operating conditions you use the truck under.

Your truck came from the factory filled with motorcraft semi-synthetic 10w30 diesel oil.

Use what you wish though.

Read the manual and do as it says, or take it to the dealer.
I use the ford recommended oil.

I use Ford recommend oil. I paid more for my truck, then anything else in my life yet(House will come soon) and I want it to have whats best recommended by the people who built the motor. Don't get scared by the type writer tick that will follow. It is completely normal and will go away on it's own.

shell t6. are you going to save a few bucks on a 60k truck? if you really dont want to use full syn, send your oil to blackstone and you will get a definitive answer to what your oil is doing

I use motorcraft 15/40 wt CJ 4 diesel motor oil.

That is probably what he was thinking. I buy it at walmart.

I use the 15/40 since I tow heavy.

Read the diesel supplement.

As others have said, it must be CJ-4, no matter what brand of CJ-4 oil you choose within the ranges Ford has specified.
See attached.
I used the factory fill for almost 5,000, Motorcraft 15w-40 for 45,000 miles and have been using Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 for the past 10,000 miles.

I use Shell Rotella, just my preference. "T" series HD diesel rated engine oil.
3 versions

T - standard "dino" oil
T-5 synthetic blend
T-6 full synthetic

You can mix non syn with syn. You should make sure though that you are buying a diesel rated oil. There is more involved then just bearing protection. Emissions play a part as well.

I will typically buy whatever is on sale at wally world. Sometimes the T5 or T6 are the same price as the T.

I will usually look for the T5 on sale for my winter oil change, "supposed" to be better for cold starts.

I don't do extended drains, so there is no savings in going the full synthetic route for me. But, when it is priced right - that is what goes in.

So have your friend qualify his statement, did he mean non synthetic versus synthetic?

Just FYI, NAPA has the valvoline premium blue diesel oil on sale again this month.

10w30 synth blend and 15w40 regular are $11.99/Gal and the 5w40 full synth is $19.99/Gal.

Bought a bunch the last time they had it on sale and am going to go stock up again.
