Transfer case problems
So I just got news from the mechanic my transfer case will either need to be replaced or re built. I have a few questions . What transfer case do I have on my truck (2000 ford f350 v10 6.8 4x4 automatic). Also is this a job I can tackle on my own if I goto a pull it your self yard or get one off craigslist. And if anyone could direct me to good thread or write up on a how to do it yourself. . Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is a basic thing and I may of missed a step. If
you can have some help handy when you pull it out. (You can always trade steak and beers)
Transfer case R&R is not a bad job. All you need is basic tools
and if you can a transmission jack and chains for the jack.
The case is an odd shaped duck and will try to twist on you
as you move it around. One other thing to have is a few
long extensions for you ratchets that way if you need
some reach you have it.
Support the transmission and case. Remove the crossmember
unbolt the case from the transmission and also make sure you
have the wires and any linkage out of the way. Also remove the drive shaft.
The nuts will be 12 point so have the right wrench or socket. they most likely
have some thread locker on them and will be a bit of a grunt to move.
You then move it back towards the rear and should be able to lower it then.
As you lower it make sure that nothing is going to catch and or drop on you.
Nothing that make for a bad day then dropping the transmission on your body.

Really depends on funds and where you can get a used one.
New truck that had been rolled would be a good pick. But they
likt to sell the set at most places. You don't want one where there
had been any major frame damage do to the transmission and transfer
case possibility taking some of the force.
One thing about a rebuilt one is you can pick who does it and you know
what went into it along with any warrantee.
