Also, Dana 44's use 5/16" bolts (1/2" head) bolts to hold the cover on while Dana 60's, 70's, and 80's (I'm unsure about Dana 50's) use 3/8" bolts (9/16" head).
Forgive my mechanical negligence. The PO of my truck had told me the front axel was a Dana 44HD. But someone just told me the 44HD was only on the 4x4 trucks. True or not? My truck is a 78 F-250 but the frame is a 77 3/4
I've been reading this thread since it's inception and I'd like ask a question that hasn't been asked yet.
Is it possible that the PO installed the 78 cab & bed on a 4 x 4 frame and left the front axle on the truck but didn't have a transfer case or anything 4 x 4 related and so hooked up the steering and left the d44 in front? Is this a possibility?
I didn't see yet where landers0440 definitely stated what the front end consisted of.
Nobody knows jack without pics. It might have a crown vic front end for any of you know.
Yeah, I know. The thing that really struck me is this: why would the PO tell him it had a d44 front axle when he just had to look under the truck to see there was no front axle (if it was 2WD).
A friend of mine bought an Explorer and didn't know it was 4x4 ford the first two years he had it. The dash switch was the only indicator and it did not work, so he figured it was a two wheel drive, until he met me.
