Forgive my mechanical negligence. The PO of my truck had told me the front axel was a Dana 44HD. But someone just told me the 44HD was only on the 4x4 trucks. True or not? My truck is a 78 F-250 but the frame is a 77 3/4
Dana 44's are a driven axle. That means they are powered by the drive train via transfer case and a drive line. Your 2wd front axle is just a beam with ball joints for knuckles and spring perches for suspension. Do a little reading and you'll figure it out. Here is a pic of some Dana 44 axles. See the pumpkin? Those pumpkins are housings for gears. 2wd = no gears. Capiche?
The reason I bought this old truck was to teach myself these sort of things. I never had a dad or any guy around to teach me this stuff and I'm only 20 so give me a break man. Not to sound ungrateful for the information or anything like that but that's why I joined this forum.
Like you've never asked a question about something you knew nothing about. Cut the guy some slack and remember what goes around comes around.
I didn't mean to insult, but I mean,
Common....
There is a google, I have been reamed for asking questions that a simple search could have answered.

And I can relate to this. My dad didn't care about cars or trucks, so it was magazines and parts catalogues to learn how cars are put together. But today we have google and google can answer many many simple questions.
