Dana 44HD only on 4x4?

Forgive my mechanical negligence. The PO of my truck had told me the front axel was a Dana 44HD. But someone just told me the 44HD was only on the 4x4 trucks. True or not? My truck is a 78 F-250 but the frame is a 77 3/4

The Dana 44hd is a front drive axle. If your truck is a 2wd, it does not have a 44hd.

So then it's just a Dana 44 correct?

Dana 44's are a driven axle. That means they are powered by the drive train via transfer case and a drive line. Your 2wd front axle is just a beam with ball joints for knuckles and spring perches for suspension. Do a little reading and you'll figure it out. Here is a pic of some Dana 44 axles. See the pumpkin? Those pumpkins are housings for gears. 2wd = no gears. Capiche?

Everyone has to learn sometime I suppose.

If the PO told you a 2wd had a D44... It makes me wonder what else he lied about

If the previous owner told you it had a 44, it doesn't mean he is a liar. It does however indicate he is ignorant.

The front axle will not be a dana 44, but apparently the rear could be.

Except it's a 3/4 ton, which doesn't make sense.... best to post pics of truck so someone here can set you straight on what you have.

The reason I bought this old truck was to teach myself these sort of things. I never had a dad or any guy around to teach me this stuff and I'm only 20 so give me a break man. Not to sound ungrateful for the information or anything like that but that's why I joined this forum.

You are in the right place! Don't feel bad for not knowing much about these trucks. There is a wealth of information to be had from members on FTE.

Do you have any pictures of the truck?

I didn't mean to insult, but I mean,
Common....
There is a google, I have been reamed for asking questions that a simple search could have answered.

And I can relate to this. My dad didn't care about cars or trucks, so it was magazines and parts catalogues to learn how cars are put together. But today we have google and google can answer many many simple questions.
