E4OD rebuild
This is a repost from the oldertrucks forum per the suggestion of the moderator<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
So now that I have the engine and fuel system working well in my project (91F250) I have discovered that the transmission is slipping bad in 3rd and thelockup solenoid is not working, so I have decided to rebuild my E4OD. Back inthe day, when I was a 20 something kid, I rebuilt my share of Turbo-350ies acouple of 400s and one torque-flight, but never an electronically controlled 4speed. But I am one of those guys that likes to do things myself so here goesnothing.... I ordered the ATSM manual, and then I discovered the factory ford referencemanual on line. Which brings me to myquestion: Since ford uses the thicknessof the snap-ring to adjust the clutch clearance, and since I don’t want to assemblea clutch pack, measure it, order the correct snap ring and then wait for it to arrive, does anyone know where I can find an assortment of snap-rings for each clutchpack so that I can simply install the right one and be done with it?

You should be able to get them at Transmission Parts & Kits | Rebuilt Transmissions & More | Transtar

Its been a while since I posted but my E4OD is coming together well. I have the time and there is no hurry so I am fixing everything I find, and it is a long list; The usuial stuff like new seals, steels and frictions, but also thrust bearings, thrust washers, forward and rear planetary upgrades (to steel caged 6-pinion), replacmnet of the reverse drum. Three Trans-Go kits for shift, 3rd-4th selector, and accumulator fixes, spiral locking snap rings, reverse delay correction kit, a custom made VITON seal between the case and the intermed apply piston, and even a complete BW1356 T-Case Overhaul (with a Timken kit).
As this was my first E4OD Rebuild I was concerned about several things that I should not have been. The most important was tools. both the ASTM and the FORD manual show a host of tools that I thought I would have to at least build if not outright buy. In the end I built two custom tools that were really quite simple and used angle iron, all thread rod, and plumbing hardware. I have a small press (12 ton) and I used that several times, to compress return springs, but that and a few c-clamps will get you there.
One thing that has proven a life saver is the ford manual. I have the ASTM too, and it is good but if you are like me, and you have to stop what you are doing to deal with one thing or another, then come back and try to figure out what goes where.... Well fully annotated photographic exploded views are the ticket.
I will say this..... Don't let them scare you. If you can re-build a Motor you can do this. It just takes attention to detail and time.

Automatic transmissions are a bit more of a pain than working on other auto components. There is a good E4OD tutorial on youtube by "Transmission Bench" its the best ever. Not the typical fast talking wax on wax off type of deal, not showing how to place thrust bearings etc. (Karate Kid). Shows how to make those special tools too.
