find the knock help needed

i have a knock/ leak. the front pass side of the engine you can hear a knock ( my buddy says its a air leak). yesterday when i cracked the front pass injector the engine did not change, tonite i put a new injector in and now the noise goes away a good bit. as for the part im confused about, my buddy swears its the headgasket coming out in the front of the engine, but i have not seen any other signs like oil and coolant mixing, or a loss of power.

long story short im finally stumped any suggestions?

Is it a knock, or is it a leak? Start with injectors, crack 1 at a time until the noise goes away and you have your problem cylinder. If that doesnt do it, id pull the valve cover and look at the valvetrain.

On these engines, it's usually mis-matched/failing injectors.

thats what i thought, so i popped the injector, and the engine did not change. that screams bad injector. so i replaced it. now the noise is still there but it gets less with the new injector cracked

Could be a bad valve or similar. Id pull the valve cover. Also, with the engine cool, start it and let it idle a sec. Feel the exhaust manifold right at the exhaust port, see if the suspect cylinder doesnt get hot, or as hot as the others. Works pretty good on gassers, but our exhuast might not be hot enough at idle to tell.

Just a quick observation I had the same noise on my IDI and it turned out to be the vacuum pump. I disconnected the belt and it went away So I replaced the pump now no more noise
