Tires - 2002 f350 -285/75/16
1. I am considering replacing the stock tire (265/75/16) with new tires that are size 285/75/16. Will the 285/75/16 (approx 33" dimeter) fit the wheel well area?
My reason for the larger size is to increase the load range from 3415 lbs /tirr to 3750 lbs/tire, to better support a new truck camper that weighs about 500 lbs more than my earlier truck camper.
2 what are negative consequences of the new tire size?
2002 F350, SCab, long box, V10, 4x2

My dad and I have been running 285/75R16s on our SDs for over a decade. If you want to up size the tire on a 99'-04' SD the 285/75R16 is optimal IMO. The pros far outweigh the cons, however there are some cons.
- Stock rim width is 7" wide which is below the minimum recommended rim width by the manufacturers for the 285/75R16. This means you have the air the tire down a little more than a 265/75 in order to get even wear across the tread width on the back tires
- Another con is the approximately 1" diameter increase of the 285/75 vs the 265/75 or 235/85 will slightly affect the final drive ratio. This can be corrected with a gear change but most do not bother.
- On some trucks depending on how aggressive the tire is a 285 can scrape some molded mud guards.(4X4 trucks, may differ for 2wd)

Look at the recommended rim width recommendation by th etire manufacturer. Minimum most recommend is a 7.5" wide wheel for a 285/75R16. The stock wheel is 7". I would say a good rim width for the 285 would be 8" or so. However as I mentioned the stock wheels work more than fine. What I have against a lot of the larger aftermarket wheels is that they are cast wheels (instead of forged for OE) and are lug centric (vs hub centric for the OE).
