Yeah well a drain plug is a great idea but after 55 years of (probably) never being touched it could be a real challenge to get out. It would be bad to mess up the plug. Other than the special tool or trying to suck out the lube through the fill hole, the alternative is to disconnect the driveshaft, pop the axles, and drop out the third member. Not the hardest job in the world, but that route inevitably leads to "well now I should change the gasket, and as long as I've got the axles out I should replace the bearings and seals, and those brake lines are looking a little cracked," etc. etc., and then you're broke.

At one time there was actually a tool to remove both drain and fill plugs, I don't know of any made these days. I have both, one is a little smaller then 3/8 and one is a little larger the 1/2. They look like a short extension and fit on 1/2 drive ratchet/breaker bar.
Edit: Looks like Harbor Freight has a cheapo set of 12, both hex and square.
