Gasket curing on Differential after gear oil change

Permatex RTV Tube says 24 hours to be completely dry. Do I need to wait the 24 hrs before driving? Is it safe to attempt driving before the 24 hrs is up?

not in a hurry, just want to do it right!

Eric

I've used the black sealant (I think that is the RTV) and when I've had the time I've left the diff. sit empty overnite, which is over-kill

I've had a couple done at shops and they do exactly as David says above: dump it, clean the inside good and remove all the old gasket, apply new sealant and let it skin over for a minute and slap it together and fill it right up.

Never have had a leak either way...

I would recommend this type of permatex Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker, 3 oz. Amazon.com: Permatex 81182 Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker, 3 oz.: Automotive

I used the black type and the oil ate it up and it leaked , this stuff is made for the harsh environment

Fel pro makes a gasket for the rear diff. I put a thin film of ultra black on both sides of the gasket and bolt it up. Can't go wrong with TA-29 either. But I don't use it there. I'm actually doin my personal truck today. I use Mobil 1 full syn LS 75w 140 and haven't needed any modifier in the couple miles I've done. Lol.
