My E250 has the back pump and rail pump replaced. Did away with the selector and also replaced the tank itself. Lotta rust scale in there. That scale may be chewing up your pumps but I'd think the screen should keep it out. But if the screens are stopping up and starving the pumps it may be your issue.

Cleaning those tanks is a pain. Many mechanics are only too happy to charge you for pump replacement while ignoring the rust and fuel contamination.

Replacement fuel tanks are readily available for this application.
I'm not sure if the van sat for a long time before I got it. It was used as a grip truck by the movie lighting company that I bought it from. The owner took very good care of it, ie; changing the oil every 2,000 miles.

I am confident my mechanic cleaned the tanks. He is a perfectionist and runs a two man operation although I understand what you are saying about. I'm going to change the fuel selector valve first and see if that resolves the pump problem.

Is it ok to switch tanks while the engine is running or am I supposed to switch then start it back up? This is my first experience with a dual tank setup.

My 1988 mostly sat for the last 10 years, in the cold in Illinois. I found some kind of white mineral deposits covering the filter sock which would not allow the gas through. The fuel selector valve has a reservoir which supplies fuel during switching tanks.

On my 92 F-150, the system is different, the in tank pumps are high pressure so no main pump on the frame rail. I always drove on one tank until it coughed then switched tanks. I got 116,000 miles on one pump, 123,000 on the other. The pumps were still fine, the check valve in the pump assembly failed causing the running pump to overfill the other tank.

Hi, Jim. I purchased a BWD fuel tank selector valve and wiring harness. I am curious where the wiring harness in your picture is located. I assume you connected your new valve wiring into that. Am I correct?
