Well we can rule out old oil and fuel as culprits. :-) Changed the fuel filter when I got the truck home and changed the oil and filter today. Drove it about 10 miles to the store to fill with fuel. No change in the way it runs.
I did change the shift lever so I now have an OD button. The trans seems to wind up before shifting and it hits pretty hard. Also noticed it will downshift as you slow to make a turn, long before I would think it should.
My AE scantool came in today, maybe I'll have some time tomorrow to hook it up and see what's happening.

Sounds kinda like a sticky ipr to me. Sitting 18 months it could be. See what AE says.

Trans, does it hit hard in every gear every time?

OK guys, bringing this back to the top. Finally had a few minutes to get back to the truck.
Hooked up the AE and it pretty much told me there is absolutely nothing wrong No codes, cylinder contribution test shows nothing. The only time I got anything at all was during the KOEO test, it pulled 1271, 1272 and 1277 high to low side open. Does this point to a possible IDM problem? Injector buzz test sounds even on all cylinders.
Not sure where to go from here, this truck has 241K miles and is pretty rough, don't want to throw a lot of $$$ at it.

Any ideas? Anybody? I might have access to another IDM so that I can check that, but with my work schedule lately I have no idea when that will happen.
I bought this truck pretty much as a project, maybe learn a little something about a PSD at the same time, but need a little guidance to help figure this out.

I'd start by looking for burnt pins on the outer connections of the valve covers. I'd also ohm out the connections for the injectors at the vc's. The connections have 5 pins each, outer ones are gp's, ones beside them are the injectors, and the middle is a common ground. Test the injectors to the common ground, should be right close to 3.2 each. Means you're testing if you want you can test the gp's to battery ground, should be 1 ohm each.

I have checked the connections, no burned pins. I'll try to get back to the truck this weekend and ohm the injectors. Pretty sure there are a few dead GPs, the WTS light only stays on for 2-3 seconds, but the truck starts easily.

I don't use Schaeffer's but I've seen black debris at the bottom of containers of several oil brands. I called one of them once to ask about it. I'm not a chemist and not sure if I'm repeating their explanation correctly but the base oil will only accept so much of the additive package. Not sure if dissolved is the correct term, but in order to make sure that the correct amount of additive is dissolved in the base stock, they add a little extra. Over time the excess additive comes out of solution and ends up at the bottom of the container.

They told me it's not a problem and having seen it in more than one oil brand I don't think it is a problem.
