6.7L EGT off the charts, stutter'd then died

So -- I load up the trailer on the 2011 6.7L (56,000 miles) this morning, head out onto the interstate for some Sunday fun and in the "middle" of a regen my Torque App (EGT) temp shoots up violently, the truck stutter steps, downshifts HARD and I'm bingo ground speed and have to pull over as the engine dies, quite catastrophically -- since I work on vehicles and have a shop I know better than to try cranking it after this type of "event", so I call AAA and have them tow it off to the dealership's service bay entrance.

As background, this vehicle has already been back to the dealership (under warranty) five times for replacement of the turbo, fuel pump, computer, and various diagnostic codes issues. I'm not particularly pleased with the fuel mileage and today's problem makes me think it's time to investigate a lemon type issue with the dealership.

I'm pretty confident that something internal went haywire in the engine (e.g. valve), but since it's still under warranty (100,000) I'm letting the dealer "deal" with it --- should it end being in the engine internals I may just leave it with the dealership and pursue a lemon charge against Ford.

There have been several reports of bad EGT sensors causing that exact thing. Replace the sensor, reset the code and get back on the road. It's bad enough that a lot of guys are carrying spares on board, along with the tools to change it roadside. Should not be a big deal getting you back on the road. Sorry for the bad luck.

Scratch one engine ---they tore into it this morning and it took out an exhaust valve............apparently an exhaust superheat (during regen)..........looks like Ford is buying an engine.

Let's hope I get a newer year's version..........because 2011's 6.7L is a PROBLEM

Bummer! I hate dealing with any kind of vehicle problems, especially major ones on the road!... Glad for you that at least this will be on Fords "Dime"...

Do you know what the EGT got to? I better start towing with mine so that if it's going to fail it does it under warranty 69000km (43,000mi) on it now.

Unfortunately you sucked an exhaust valve. More common on the c&c's, but an occasional pickup has had that happen as well.

Look at this way - you are getting a new motor.... If you are worried about it, then this might be the time to trade it in.

X2. Everyone's different and odds are new motor will be perfectly fine, but I would use this as an excuse to get a 15. Not because I would worry about the motor but because I love excuses to get new toys... Keep us posted on how it turns out...

Still thinking about using the lemon law? Trading the truck?

I am curious. I see 1200 on the highway during regen. Recently while towing I was coming into Wilmington when a regen process started. As I began to get into stop and go traffic EGT4 hit 1526 on my Edge insight. I have never seen it that high.

EGT 4 sensor is the end of the line sensor. Which means the exhaust temp out the tailpipe was close to 1500. Your exhaust tip would have been dull cherry red which is around 1470. I've never seen EGT 4 above 1200. That should burn some soot...

I saw 1410 once, 1350+ several times.

I think the regen system can be caught by surprise under the right conditions. Whenever that happens, you can see both EGT 1 & 2 dropping rapidly in an attempt to get the temps under control. Too bad it can't actually regen at those temps. My CTS shows the soot level dropping 2-3 counts per second at 1390 degrees. That would certainly be a quick regen!

Wow, temperatures in excess of 1500 F., has me wondering if there isn't a flaw in the system design. Even modern valve alloys can't handle those kind of temperatures without serious loss of longevity. May be the metallurgy of the valves, but could also be a head design issue or a flaw in the regen control system causing these exhaust valve failures.
