Ohio Truck Meet 2014 with towing videos!

Another year and another Ohio truck meet with towing videos. Once again we had a trailer loaded to about 15K that each truck took a turn towing up a 15%-18% grade.

Below are the pulls from four of the trucks. Also in attendance but not pulling where John (Maxium4x4) and Ryan (btrs22).

First up was Mitch (MitchPeters) and his 2000 V10 F350 SC/LB with 3.73 gears and 5 Star’s 87 Performance tune.

The V10 has proven why it’s a work horse. 160+ miles and still running strong. Once the RPMs are able to build the V10 sings like it always does.

Next was Matt’s (2000silverbullet) and his 2011 6.2 F250 CC/LB with 4.30 gears, 35” tires and 5 Star’s 93 Performance tune. I apologize for the start of the video being cut off and the couple missing seconds during the video. I has having issues recording from my phone on and off all day.

The 6.2 still continues to impress. With a prefect combo of 4.30 and the 6 speed it really is able to get into and stay in its power band well. It will be interesting to see how well it does against the 2015 6.7 and what, if any, plans Ford has for future gas engines to keep up with the diesels.

For the first time we had a DRW truck make a pull. Scott (Senix) replaced his 6.4 with 2013 6.7 F350 DRW CC/LB with 3.73 gears.

Of all the pulls Scott’s 6.7 come out of the gate the quickest. Things leveled out a bit after it upshifted though. The 6.7 kept cranking away and stormed up the hill.

For the second time only a 7.3 made a pull. John (CampSpringsJohn) brought his 2002 7.3 CC/LB with 3.73 gears and Swamps 40HP Tow tune. Near the end of the run John had a surge and when he got out of it he lost boost.

I’m sure if there wasn’t a surge that John had to back off of his speed would have been very similar to Mitch’s V10 speeds.

And finally Mitch reprogrammed for a 91 Tow tune and gave it one more go.

One thing always sticks out in my mind after each one of these meets. Whether it’s gas or diesel trucks from similar model years perform very close to one another. One may be a bit quicker or do it in a different way but riding in the cab for all the pulls they pretty much feel the same. It goes to show that no matter what engine you should buy the truck that matches what you want.

I would like to thank everyone for coming out again. I look forward to another meet next year!

Looks like a great time Mike!

Seemed like John's truck was making some funny noises towards the end. Was that some kind of turbo flutter?

By the way the videos are still going through a stabilization processes so they will be a bit shaky.

John said it started to surge and he backed off. By then he lost the boost and never was able to get it to build up enough.

As always Mike is great host and puts this meet together on his own. Nice to see everyone new & old and the weather cleared up for a good day. What I would like to mention for anyone who is watching these videos, you do not really get an idea of the starting point grade to get these truck rolling.

That poor trailer......

Thanks for coming again John. It's always good to have a mix of old and new faces. I was a bit worried about the weather there for awhile but it turned out to be a beautiful day.

And I'm sure that trailer has seen worse! Well maybe.

That starting point is like a 15% grade. The challenge is to gain speed up the hill from a dead stop with 15K worth of trailer and load.

Even with the DRW it wanted to spin the tires.

I really wish I could've gone this year. I really wanted to see the comparison between the 4.30s you have and my 3.73s. Now that I've gone to 35's I'm wishing I would've ordered the 4.30s when I bought my truck.

Looks like everybody had a good time. Hopefully I can make it next year.

Thanks for hosting Mike! Yes Tom, it shifted into Drive and the drop in RPM's created a lot of turbo surge. You've got to let out of it or it will shorten the life of the turbo. For those that don't understand what turbo surge is, it is boost that is created that the engine can't use. Basically it trys to make the turbo run in reverse.

Something missing in the videos is the trip down that hill! We have to take the trailer down that hill, stop at the bottom and turn around. And that I believe is really just as important to take note. Mitch and I both smoked the brakes getting down that hill. That's a 12 and 14 year old truck for you. Matt and Scott's trucks really showed how much advancement has been made in both gas and diesel trucks in how well they can hold back that kind of load without using too much brake. Pulling is great, but not as important as being able to get it stopped. I down shifted to 2nd going down, then into 1st when I neared the bottom.

Hey Mike, didn't you say you weighed something like 21,000lbs with your truck and trailer when you picked it up?

Thanks for making it again Matt. I do like the sound of the V10 and 6.2 when they are spinning their way up to redline. There are each unique but so cool to hear!

Definitely next time. Anyone that shows up is always welcome to take the truck for a test drive.

I knew coming from 37" tires on the old truck there wasn't going to be a way I was keeping the stock pizza cutters. I had plans my wife was unaware of, Haha.

Thanks again for having us all and for lunch! Is it bad that I was looking for a totaled 4.30 geared truck?
