Oil Dipstick, am I crazy?

1977 Ford F150 300 4x2
I took my truck into a shop to have come work done by some old timers that seemed to know there stuff with older vehicles. It wasn't until a week or so later that I looked under the hood to find oil everywhere in the driver side engine bay, I didn't know what to think at first, then I noticed that the oil dipstick was missing. I called them and they claimed they didn't have it... Okay. Either way, I have been looking everywhere for a dipstick to replace the missing one and for the life of me I cannot, absolutely cannot find one. Seriously? These engines were made for 35+ years and I can't find one? I tried a couple "universal" dipstick from Autozone and the like but each one comes in contact with an unknown spinning object in the pan and makes a metal on metal noise. Should I be looking outside the usual 73-79 range for another dipstick? If someone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Time to call a junk yard. Just my opinion has the pan been modified, stock, or aftermarket? Iv had to cut down dipstick s or buy longer ones on racing engines before. Did they do anything related to the problem?

The "universal" types might have to be shortened and marked in order to work.

It is a stock oil pan, no modifications.

The universal dipsticks would "rub" on something, it sounded like metal on metal to me. they also would not fit the top of the tube properly.

Does anyone have a dipstick that they could take a pic of or tell me if it has any particular bends in it?

How many miles are on the engine? The dipstick doesn't stop oil from coming out of the tube. I'm wondering if excessive blowby is what caused you to lose the dipstick in the first place.

14 in from oil end of dipstick to the bell that goes over the tube, mine is straight for more clarity 14in goes into the tube 1in from oil end is bottom of the safe zone.
