2005 Navigator ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE

New here and thanks for the help upfront.

My nav just puked on me with an ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE. After doing some research on it, it seems that it's the TPS throttle position sensor. I started tearing her down and theres this pain in the tail shroud covering the air filter box. Is that shroud necessary or can I cut it off? And if it really is necessary, what is the best way to get it off.

Thanks

ok, got the TB off...

but my question still stands... is there a significant reason for me to keep this shroud or can I cut it off?

Did you read the fault codes to find out specifically what the computer is complaining about or were you just guessing about the TPS sensor?

A similar thing happened to my bosses '05 and her battery and alternator were both failing. I think it could be a ton of things that require some diagnostics.

Yes, I was just guessing based on the results from search engine inquiries. I have a OBDII tester coming in the mail in the next day or so and will get the codes then. until then, it sits. I did just change the battery out within the last month.

Once you get and can post the DTCs, it will be a lot easier to assist in diagnosing the problem.

In the meantime, cleaning the throttle body *might* be useful.

I cleaned the throttle body and replaced the position sensor and that didn't do squat! But as soon as my scanner comes in the mail, I'll post the codes.

If you have an Autozone near you they will scan it free today. At least you'll be able to start the repairs today, or order the needed parts and save your scanner for any new problems.

problem is... the car cannot be driven in its current condition. The scanner is on the truck to be delivered today (according to the tracking) so I should be able to scan it today.

I knew that...I guess I was out in the sun too long today. I tend to go brain dead when that happens.

So I got the scanner and the codes that came in are...

P2104
P2107
P2110

which according to the manual that came with the scanner...

104 = MAF or VAF A Circuit Intermittent
107 = MAP/BARO Circuit Low Input
110 = IAT Sensor Circuit Malfunction

So.... anyone want to tell me what is going on? Is my MAF sensor shot? What is a MAP circuit or an IAT Sensor?

You're mis-reading something. Those are P2xxx codes, not P01XX codes.

P2104: The TAC system is in the failure mode effects management (FMEM) mode of forced idle. // This DTC is an informational DTC and may be set in combination with a number of other DTCs which are causing the FMEM. Diagnose other DTCs first.

P2107: Description: The electronic throttle control (ETC) area of the powertrain control module (PCM) failed the self-test. The fault could be the result of an incorrect throttle position (TP) command, or TAC motor wires shorted together. // Possible Causes: TAC motor wire shorted together TAC motor circuit wires shorted to PWR Damaged electronic throttle body (ETB) Damaged PCM

P2110: Description: The TAC system is in the failure mode effects management (FMEM) mode of forced limited RPM. // This DTC is an informational DTC and may be set in combination with a number of other DTCs which are causing the FMEM. Diagnose other DTCs first.

The P2107 is probably the key one for diagnostic purposes. Looking through the procedure in the PCED, it looks like the fault will be a wiring concern around the TACM, a bad ETB, or a bad PCM.
