$500 NO WAY in my book.
All you have to do is remove the valve cover and
they are right in your face. I'll dig-up a PDF for you
later tonight that will tell you what you need to do.
The update kit comes all ready to install and all you
need to do is put oil on the rings, slide then in and torque.

If your '05 and the '06 take the same standpipes & plugs, they have been updated. The originals have just an o-ring where the updates have a wider groove with Teflon back-up ring behind the o-ring to keep it from squirming around and wearing as the pressure fluctuates. It's worth the bucks to replace them.
This is the parts counter price at my local Ford dealer. Better prices can be had online.
6E7Z-9A332-A. Stand pipes (seals pre-installed 2each) list$145.66 I pay $95.00.
W302908. Dummy plugs (seals pre-installed 2 each). list$47.16. I pay $35.38.
I agree $500 sounds a little high but many shops are getting that kind of money these days. If it includes parts it's not too bad.

It includes parts but he works out of his house so I would expect a little off from the ford dealer. What little bit I have found on it, sounds easy to do. I have done head gaskets and engine installs on many cars so I am a capable mechanic. I wonder if I will already have the upgraded stand pipes in there. Since the head gaskets were done twice once by a Ford dealer seems they would have updated them.

The D-rings not O-rings in this case are very stiff and
once you get them in place have to rest for a while
so they can relax back into size. The reason they are
called D-rings is they are flat on one side unlike an
O-ring that is curved all the way around.
Someone will correct me if I am wrong. I think
that new head gasket kits come with new standpipes
and dummy plugs.

EDIT : I checked with Ford and new head gasket kits come with
new standpipes but not any dummy plugs.

Do you have a number for the seal(s). My limited experience is pulling the old style pipes/plugs out and putting the new style in. As you know in aviation this is fairly common arrangement. The Teflon/o-ring set up is inside the female half of most quick disconnect fittings. We do change the seals sometimes (in my real job) but it's usually for a knicked o-ring from someone mating up the QD's crooked when putting stuff back together. We always use a new Teflon back-up ring also. You explanation of the D ring makes sense, I guess the flat part rests on the Teflon ring?

I am with my mother she needed some eye stuff done.
So I don't have access to all my photos at home. I will
post a photo of the old style D-ring. I wished I could
say what the part number for the replacements is but
I have not been in and needed to do that yet.
I think next time I am in IH I will ask.
