specifications for 1974 351 W
Hello. Can anyone tell me where to find online, the specs for testing my ignition coil with an ohm meter? I have an aftermarket one, but it doesn't fit in any brackets I have, so I am putting a stock one back in, and want to make sure that it tests okay. Also, my headlights flicker. I have checked every ground connection I have, and that doesnt appear to be the issue. Wondering what else could cause it? I did replace the switch and that didn't do it...btw...even though the engine is a 1974, the truck itself is a 1981 f150.

Did you check the grounding of the regulator case? That usually causes the flickering. Take a wire and run from there directly to the battery negative and see what happens. Also check the connections on the alternator.
What ignition are you running in this truck? The old points or the 1980 duraspark II?

The folks on here are AWESOME!!
Did you check the grounding of the regulator case?[/QUOTE]...I have not, but I will now!

If you have the original duraspark II ignition system, I would run the original duraspark II coil. This coil will use the horseshoe connector and will have funny looking pins on the top, not threaded studs. There is a reason for that, they want you to run the correct coil for this system for performance AND the life/longevity of the original ignition box. If you want to run the aftermarket coil go ahead, but I do not recommend it with this system, it can make the ignition box run hotter than it should.

Franklin, Thank you very much for the advice I'm going to look into that. Right now I'm running an aftermarket accell. My OHM reading for that was a few numbers higher than the stock and Ford replacement ones. Do you happen to know how much one of those cost? The stock one I have seemed to say Motorcraft on it, but I didn't look much closer...actually, they do have the pins on top, with a snapon half top, which has wires running out of it. If those are indeed, the ones you are talking about, then, I do have them (2), but since they have lower primary and secondary numbers, are they still the best option? I dont know enough about engine electrical to make even an educated guess. Your help is very much appreciated
