Haynes, Chilton or...

I've only owned Jeeps in the past, so Fords and pickups are totally new to me. Was going to pick up a basic repair manual, something like haynes or chilton, but as I look at the reviews, there seems to be a lot of naysayers about them covering my 2010.

So is there a basic repair manual out there that is actually worth having?

You might check into all data. I used to have it for my Excursion. It is online based.

www.motorcraftservice.com has the actual workshop manual for these pickups.

The haynes and chilton manuals tend to lump a lot of years together that shouldn't be. For example, 1973-1988 C/K pickups. Not only was there a major design change in 1981, but there were little changes along the way.

It appears the Super Duty's were treated the same. The Haynes manual is for 1999-2010... Never mind the huge change in 2008 or the minor, but significant, change in 2005.

The best place for service manuals is Helm Corp. That's the manual you get from motorcraftservice.com and it's worth it.

I highly recommend Alldata. For around $20/year you can subscribe to the factory shop manual. Unlike Haynes which is essentially reverse-engineered information, Alldata is genuine factory repair info.

I just used my Alldata subscription last weekend to replace a power door cable on my wife's Sienna. The detailed diagrams and step-by-step instructions made a major interior disassembly relatively easy.

I no longer subscribe to it for the Super Duty, but here's an example I pulled off for a Fusion. You can't get this from a Haynes manual.

The chilton-type manuals are no longer worth it. I did buy the haines superduty manual that covers the excursion, but it has 7.3, 6.0, and v8, and v10 info, so most of it is different. A few useful pictures, but mostly better info on FTE, i can download and organize myself..

You can find pictures and complete writeups on-line now.

Oh, i did buy ford shop manuals on line from a guy selling stuff from a closed down dealership. Best $150 i spent in a long time.

Sent from my Sprint PC36100 using IB AutoGroup

X2 on Alldata... Bt if you need/want printed manuals, I would get the factory service manual, Motor Manual, Chilton, Haynes - in that order...

There are manuals made by a company named Bentley for some imported cars that are the bee's knees... Too bad they don't make them for our trucks...
