4.9l firing order
Help
I have just changed the spark plug wiring on my 1993 F150 4.9l.
The manual I have shows the firing order as 1-5-3-6-2-4 Distributor rotation clockwise.
This Did not work and I understand there are 2 different firing orders for this inline 6. Does any one know the other?
Thanks

I have that information right in front of me. Ok, you have a hold down screw at the 10 o'clock and the 4 o'clock position. Your rotor turns clockwise. Number one cylinder is at 3 o'clock, just before the hold down screw at 4 o'clock. Then continue clockwise with 5, 3, 6, 2 & 4. You should be in business!

Well I don't know what I did but it won't fire up.
It was running ok before I started other than a lot of miles on the wires, cap, rotor, and plugs. I tried the old cap and rotor again, but no luck either. It just cranks over like crazy.
Well tomorrow's another day. Its getting dark in the East!
Could I have done any damage trying to start it with the wiring wrong?
Thanks again

number 1 should be marked on the cap, it has been on everyone of them that i've replaced. if its not on the new cap. it should be on the old one if its the original cap. even the new cap should be marked with a 1 were number 1 spark plug wire should go. have you moved the distributor? or unpluged the tfi, maybe bumped the wires enough to unplug them?

there is only one firing order yhat will work on any inline 6cyl.that is 15(too young),36(too old),24(just right)-153624- if you are trying to find the number one cyl on the dist pull the number 1 plug and bring it to tdc and look at your distributor where it points should be close to number 1cyl.close enough for you to get it running and adjust the timing to correct specs.good luck

I set mine up like this and it runs like new. Please note mine is fuel injected and has a 'Y' in the vin.

If that distributor was ever out, it could be in many different wrong positions relative to the number of gear teeth on the dist drive gear.
I always replace plug wires ONE at a time because I've screwed myself in the dark trying to get stuff done in a hurry.
Next trick is to pull #1 plug, put in a plastic drinking straw and try to get the piston to TDC and then guess from there. Easiest is to turn the engine with a big wrench on the crank pulley and have a helper watch the straw come up and stop before it goes back down.
At least that will give you a 50% chance at the tdc fire position.

It wouldn't run. If you have a bad ground, it won't run very well if at all. If you have a bad wire, it won't run very well either, if at all.
