'01 sport trac running poorly at start up after plugs and wires
OK I finally got the t-stat housing, bypass hose, waterpump, fan blades and radiator done and put new plugs and wires on...
drivers side had no issues...( ran normal)__ passenger side I guess I had the wires In the wrong ports even though I followed the hayes manual diagram... I ended up using trial and error until it ran right.. but it bucked and stalled as I tried to figure it out.
Anybody have the proper firing order diagram?
this morning daughter started truck and it idled horribly and stalled.... 2nd start was a little better she gave it some gas and then it smoothed out...
she just called me an check engine light is on....
I went for a 15 minute run yesterday (getting on it hard) and it ran great!
I have to wait to get it to Advance to check codes... any body have any ideas?
did having the wires on wrong confuse the computer?
does a battery disconnect for 15 minutes (computer reset) seem like a good place to start to fix it. might double check the IAC too..

Which engine does your Sport Trac have? Will need that information to provide the proper firing order. If the coil packs have numbered towers, that makes things easy. The cylinders are numbered in order, 1-3 (V6) or 1-4 (V8) down the passenger side, starting with cylinder 1 at the belt end of the engine. Bank 2, on the driver's side, starts again at the belt end of the block with cylinder 4 (V6) or 5 (V8) and counts up as you head toward the firewall.
With codes for lean banks 1 and 2 (P0171 and P0174?) you probably have an issue with either the intake air tubing not being connected properly, a PCV elbow that is leaking, or a problem with the intake manifold gaskets. Was the truck running perfectly fine before performing the routine maintenance or was the maintenance performed to try to fix this issue?

its the SOHC 4.0L V6 I think it is the VIN "E" advance part look up says 100% of vehicles had it....
Haynes manual shows 1 2 3 passenger side and 4 5 6 driver side, front to back.....but I was having issue with which end of the coil box was which... so I could get the 1 2 3 4 6 5 end of the wires right...
is the side of coil box closest to the middle of engine bay the 1, or does it start at 1 on the far outside driver side of the box if you are at front of truck facing truck? manual show engine as if you are standing in front looking at it but shows coil box in same orientation when in reality it is 2 rows of 3 left to right... like below
1 2 3
4 6 5
or
3 2 1
5 6 4
I will know for sure in the morning but I think I fixed "LEAN ISSUE"
but still want to make sure I have plug wires right...
tried new mechanic for the waterpump, radiator ,thermostat housing and I am finding stuff he didn't finish right... 1 radiator bolt was not even threaded into clip just sitting loose in hole, the lower trans line was not tightened at radiator and ATF was running out of it, and one of the plastic lines that goes into the big air intake tube was under the tube so it looked like it was connected but was just sitting loose...( I think this was my LEAN BANK issue) sure hope the fan shaft NUT was done right, I did the fan clutch bolts, and will double check the pulley bolts too....
So I think this had nothing to do with the passenger side plugs and wires...

Yeah, I bet finding that disconnected line will fix the Lean codes. Any "unmetered air" (air entering the intake after the MAF sensor) will likely cause rough running and lean diagnostic codes.
Below is an image from the factory service manual for your 2001 Sport Trac. I think this should answer your coil question.

Yes lean condition is fixed...
thanks for the firing order pic... that is how I guessed the coil was numbered....
the firing order in the pic I believe is for the OHV 4.0L V6
The SOHC 4.0L V6 is shown as 123465 in the places I found it... but then none of the places I found it, showed the proper orientation of the coil box.
thanks again...
now, on to getting the Vette up on the Race ramps
so I can change the oil
