Fuel gauge only ready 1/2 when full

Stock gauge and sender on a 56.. Worked normally until a few weeks ago, now full is 1/2, and im never sure when its empty...

Any particular indicator as to what might have failed based on the specific symptom?

Had same problem a few years back.I checked the electrical, i think i read in a post to unplug and ground the orange wire? And Gauge needle would move. So it wasn,t that. It was the sending unit float,it was half full of gas and i think one end of the float was all banged/mashed up, i guess from hitting the tank every time i start or stop.Hope this helps it only costs about 5$.

The floats do corrode and become less buoyant. Easy fix as Big Ole says.

I sure wish it was a float! Nope, it displays 1/2 when full even with a new sender and float..

Other ideas?

Did you get the right kind of sender for your fuel gauge?
