I just installed a new Intake manifold

It's a Weiand 8023 for my 351W powered "convertible". It was something I was putting off for a while, but now it's done and I'm very glad to be free of the little oil seepage, and I will admit..some actual water seepeage too I found out.

85" 4-wheel convertible power-plant

All is well now , but with the 1" phenolic spacer for my Holley street Avenger, I have found that my OEM big air cleaner just won't fit anymore. I'm not sure what to do about that since I just went to the trouble of a new ATS switch for the air intake door (cold /hot) etc.

Any quick thoughts about this?...I have the usual way to fix it of course.

If anyone is in southern Oregon wanting or needing a working OEM HO cleaner...it could be yours for a small donation..

Best wishes for those working on their rigs today...

I vote for keeping the original air cleaner. I would think that in Oregon, you would want/need the better drivability afforded with the original set-up.

What if the 1" spacer was planed to 1/2"?

What, exactly, doesn't fit anymore? That's a pretty vague statement to be making and is askin to saying: "My printer doesn't print, what's wrong?" Is it plugged in, is it turned on, is there paper in it....

Also, why the spacer installation?

Thanks for the reply,

Yes maybe 1/2" might help, I hadn't thought about that. I should probably add that my machinist-hotrod guru talked me into blocking the exhaust flow neath the carb as well. It will run great this summer..and I'm familiar with what the winter can bring here especially when conditions are right.

That being said, I have followed the air/ground temps pretty closely and I DO live in a pretty mild winter climate for this state..

I should go measure the air cleaner I guess and see just how much it would take to fit.

Well, the basically the a/c hose routing is in the way on the firewall, and I like the phenolic spacer for heat issues..but I will admit, this manifold already is pretty tall.

Hmmmm. I was planning to run my A/C hoses up there to make things more tidy looking, and to run the HO air cleaner, which is the larger of the two cleaners. Is yours the HO unit?

Hi Gary...Yes I have an HO cleaner. Tidy is the way my a/c hoses are now as well..are you saying maybe I should try a smaller stock air cleaner?

The HO air cleaner is larger in diameter, but I can't really tell where you are hitting the hoses - height or diameter?

I'd better let you see the problem..if you remove the stud to get the horn over the top, the back of the housing hits the firewall...this pic will help:

HO air cleaner interference with firewall

I may be able to get there with a 1/2 spacer and moving the hoses..but I really don't want to do either...

How much distance to the bottom sitting down on the carb? IOW, how much smaller does it need to be?

Just measured and the HO air cleaner is just shy of 18" in diameter and the non-HO cleaner is 16". So you'll gain 1" at the rear by the use of that. And you can you the ACTS on it as they take the same ones.

I actually haven't considered removing the 1" spacer yet..that may help. You probably should do a mockup with your own new carb choice to see what you think before planning to use the HO I would think. I can see a 1" spacer is an issue...

I guess this problem has never been solved before?...I DO realize the 1" spacer adds a little mud to the water

Good to know this, it looks like a standard cleaner is what I'm looking for..thanks Gary..I'll get on the hunt..maybe I'll find what I need before winter.

Assuming the Weiand doesn't sit higher than an Edelbrock intake then all will be well as it works on Rusty and he's sporting an Eddy intake.
