302 in a 1990 f250

Ok guys I have a 93 f150 with a great running 302 and 1990 f250 with a crapy 351w. Is a 302 just a basic bolt up or what mods need to be done. I believe both are not MAF.

Just my 2 cents, I would find a decent 351w to put back in that truck. The 302 is going to be a huge downgrade in power over the 351, which probably won't make you very happy with your 3/4 ton truck.

Don't worry about that. I'm still in high school and it will mostly be used as a cruiser no hauling.

Famous last words. I agree with gnr22 if you have a good running 93 why would you pull it apart for a 90.

Have to agree with GNR and Crewcabber. Source a 351 from salvage yard and go hog-wild with the swap, but leave the 302 where it lies.

The 93 has a cracked frame. So is the swap simple or what mods need to be made?

The 5.0 will bolt right in where the 5.8 was, you will need a 5.0 flexplate to match whatever trans is in the F250(engine balance is different). Do not change any engine bay wiring in the truck but you will have to change the PCM. Exhaust Y pipe will also have to be changed or modified as the 5.0 block is narrower. If your '93 has a remote TFI module either modify the distributor to accept a TFI on the side or go find an early 5.0 distributor.

Both truck have the e4od so ill be fine with just leaving the flex plate on. Ill use the y pipe from the 93 then I guess I'll go to a jy and find me a early dizzy. I don't have to worry about what material the dizzy gear is right? Will the older 5.0's use the same gear?

You need a steel gear for the '93, so just swap the gears from the 302 to the 351 TFI dizzy mount.

Perhaps that won't work since I can't recall if there is a height difference between the 2 engine distributors.

Modifying the 5.0 dizzy you have isn't that hard, the flat where the TFI mounts is still there you just have to drill and tap holes for the mounting screws and carve an oval shaped hole for the connection between the TFI and PIP module. These parts(TFI and PIP) will transfer from the 5.8 distributor so you have everything you need to do this, just dismantle both and make it work.

A 302 drive gear will not fit on a 351 distributor.. it's larger in diameter and uses a larger oil pump drive hex.

Ok thanks. If i were to go to a jy and find a dizzy from a older 302 would I have to worry about the dizzy gear being different and tearing up the cam?

Yes, the truck 302 didn't get a roller cam until '92 so you would have to pull one from an EFI Mustang or Cougar/XR7 (HO motor) to get one with a steel drive gear.

Alright, so if I go find a correct dizzy I can just swap the steel gear onto it?

If you get one from a HO motor you won't need to.

One last question. Will the harness from the 351w work on the 302? The motor to truck uses a different connector.
