92 7.3l idles great won't go past 1200 rpm

Truck started like normal this morning and I drove about a half mile normally then I went to accelerate up a hill and she will run fine up to 1200 rpm then lots of black smoke even with the pedal to the floor no more than 1200 and it does it in park or drive I limped it back home I just have no idea what would cause it to act like this

Check your air filter too, after your fuel filter.

Black smoke is running rich. It more than likely can't breathe or it has an injector or two stuck open.

Is it a turbocharged truck? Does it have a cat?

When you said "cleaned" the air filter, I got a sneaking suspicion it had some cheapo aftermarket filter. They're all known for letting in too little air, too much dirt. If you have a tubular intake tract into the turbo, you need a NAPA 6637 or the Donaldson equivalent (I forget the number).

get a 3-4 inch adapter, a 90 degree elbow and a 6637 filter.
