Greetings - Rescuing a '94
Long story short, I found a '94 in rough condition for $1100. 5.0 sounded good and I've always wanted a Bronco so made the plunge.
Appreciate any suggestions or help. I'll put my questions in bold.
Heres what I have discovered/plan to do:
General:
This is a toy for a backup car-pulling things etc. Not looking for it to be mint. Just not embarassing to have in the driveway. Decided that if it isn't essential and if it's broken, remove it.
Body:
Lots of body rust in the places you'd expect. Planning to grind out and neutralize any rust, use bondo where I can and use Adhesive tape on flat areas like along the bottom of the tailgate.
PO cut out some of the rear fender and the rear wheel wells are totally shot. I could swear I saw a post that fender flares from some Explorer would work but can't find that post. Any help? Otherwise I'll probably rivet/epoxy new sheet metal and do the best I can smoothing it out. Either way will replace inner wheel well. Surprising there isnt a single plastic piece available as common as this is.
Interior:
PO made a mess of things with the dash installing a sound system. Has the expected broken bracket on passenger side. Dash is also broken along the top where each of the four bolts go in. Will probably pull the dash, repair/reinforce the top section, join the debate about Ford authorized vs. hardware store L bracket, fix anything obvious and put it back in place. Does anyone have a good diagram of where things are supposed to be under the dash? . The diagram in the Chilton's is so small it's useless unless you have perfect eyesight. I do not.
Horn and O/D switch not working. PO says something might not be plugged in. Any thoughts?
Will probably remove all the plastic in the rear. If anyone wants the tan colored ones, they are yours for the cost of shipping.
Suspension/Steering:
Very loose. Can't imagine these shocks are doing much good and rear leaf spring mount is spitting on passenger side.
Planning to replace shocks, and all the bushings and repairing the leaf spring mount. Which bushings will I be replacing if I order the poly bushing set that is recommended? Figure I can at least start getting the old ones removed. Again, any diagrams larger than the Chilton's one would be very helpful.
Other:
Tires need replaced when I'm done with above.
I'm sure I'll need to do a bunch of work on the brakes. Using a 4x4 (wood not truck) for e brake now.
Will go through the all the routine maint listed in Chilton's
Will sand blast etc frame and underbody and paint as I work on areas.
Maaco cheap paint job for my Christmas present this year.
Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions.
