4 speed clutch problem

4 speed clutch problem
Hey all. So my buddy just picked up a 68 high boy 390 with a 4 speed. When he was looking at it he said running or not if u put it in any gear nothing happened. No grinding no movement nothing. The guy told him something got stuck and he pried on the linkage and it hasn't moved since then. We towed it back to his house and now it goes into gear and moves. We've successfully moved it forward and backward. However we cannot get the clutch to disengage. The pedal is moving the clutch plate in and out. I can still see grooves on the plate it all seems ok. While its running and the clutch is fully depressed it makes a bit of a rattle kinda noise, the clutch plate moves out, however it does not release to shift into gear. We've backed out the adjustment screw a considerable amount hoping it was that. Now just looking for some suggestions.
Any help is much appreciated.

This is quoted from a response I received on another forum, maybe putting it here will help someone else at some point.

First guess would be the clutch disc is stuck/rusted to the flywheel. You say the pressure plate ring is moving when you push the pedal? Are you sure. If it is rattling while running sounds like something came apart. It only takes one of the three pivots of the pressure plate to break and it will not disengage. So my second guess is the pressure plate is broken and needs replaced.

Yup no way around it you got a pull the tranny and do a clutch job. Have the the flywheel shaved. Note if the flywheel needs to be shaved and the bolt heads have been starting to rubbing on the clutch hub springs then it's time for a new flywheel also.
when the clutch hub springs hit the bolt heads it keeping the clutch from disengaging as it hitting on the spring of the clutch hub. This may be the noise your hearing

It's driving now. The suggestion I posted from a different forum worked. It's still parked until we do a tune up and clutch swap. Ill inspect the flywheel when the trans is out obviously, hopefully it's good to go. We just needed to be sure the trans wasn't bad and it's not so that's good. The guy that sold it thought it was.
Oh and the noise is almost undoubtedly the throwout bearing.
