Temporary paint job on a newly welded part of the roof for a 1950 F1? Advice??

I have a 1950 Ford F1 and the person I bought it from had a sunroof put in. I didn't like the sun roof and it bothers me they would ruin the cab like that, but not much I can do about it. So I am having a skilled welder I know fix it. I took out the sunroof and cleaned it up and he is welding in a new piece to the top. He says when he is done I won't be able to tell it ever had a sunroof.

Anyway, my question is about what to do when he is done? The paint job on the truck is terrible, just horrible. It is like the previous owner spray painted it with an aerosol can himself. So I am planning to save up money and have the truck prepped and repainted properly. But in the meantime, what should I do about the piece my friend welded in on the roof? What prep work should I do to prime it to prevent it from rusting?

My hope is to have the money saved to have it painted in the next year. So would I just prime it? Would I prime it and just do a manual crappy aerosol paint job to attempt to match the bad paint job now?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks so much.

"Direct to metal" primer or epoxy primer for the short term.

Standard single part primers like in rattle cans are porous so if that's what you use, put a top coat over it, especially on the roof. Rattle can paint, even basic Rustoleum should last a couple years.

Depending on the weather you get and are exposing you to? you may want to thing of using Por-15... then you can use a rattle can if you want to try to match paint
