Prius Pampers a Passenger (Yes, it's On-Topic)

I thought I bent my driveline again, but I lucked out - a balance fell off. A moderate Buck$Zooka "Thwup" took place to have a new carrier bearing installed and re-balance the driveline. That was the mellow part.

Here is the only external visual clue I have of the Mega-Magnum Buck$Zooka round that landed in the Pumpkin - that and a mushroom cloud where once were numbers in my checking account statement.

My pinion bearing was spun, the clutch pack was burnt, and the yoke had a groove in it. The sickening part is the rest of the hardware could have gone many more miles without problem, and the ring and pinion showed almost no wear. Stinky's rear should have lasted much longer (easily another 200K miles), but something went wrong at the yoke. I say axle wrap, or that driveline being bent once, or the carrier bearing rubber separating from the frame, or the driveline going out of balance twice, or all of the above. Others may hold a different opinion... I am far from knowing what the hell I'm talking about with the drive hardware.

I will say this - I now know a lot more about the differential, seeing the contents of Stinky's butt splayed out on the bench... a little too much information. I now have a slight growl in the back (expected... parts need to break in), and a pain-in-the-butt break-in procedure to endure - to prevent a pain in the butt for Stinky: 4 rounds of trips of about 20 miles (no load, stock-ish tune) before the need to stop for 20 minutes to let things cool. My drive to work is 45 miles, so my commute just grew several more minute-hand spins of the ol' analog clock (many born after 1990 have no idea what I'm talking about).

After a day of driving to work and back like this, I have to keep the testostometer (boost gauge) low until 500 miles are rolled on the odometer. Then... one of the perks of the new cover kicks in - I use the drain plug to drain and fill the rear end again. Oh joy.

Yeah the drain on the aftermarket covers is nice.
I still have the mag-hytech rear cover on Motorbug.
Your thread reminded me its probably getting about time to change fluid.
Started getting the slightest hint of whine back there...

"moderate Buck$Zooka "Thwup""

After doing battle on my cooling system for a couple of days this week I just about hit the floor reading that.

Hope that straightens out the rear end for you. That rear cover looks great!

Sorry to hear about the Buckzooka blast Rich. That is one fine looking cover though.

I started with new bearings on the front wheels, then had everything under the frame checked, serviced, or rebuilt. The finishing touch to chase away the vibration/noises - tires. The door says the truck is to have 235/85R16s - which are pizza cutters. I actually like the handling characteristics (and fuel economy) of pizza cutters... and I really hope this helps with how badly Stinky cups the front tires.

I'll say this... Stinky is getting really quiet.

Why so many Buck$Zooka craters? I'm getting him ready to pull a 5er.
