This is a great story.

 

Is that the guy that walked away from his unit? Oops.

 

If so, I'll need to adjust my post.

 

There are conflicting reports about his capture - none, of which, seem to be substantiated. One report said he walked off while another claim was that he was captured after getting drunk. Maybe we'll find out what really happened, maybe not...

Ive been reading about this and here are some excerpts;
Former Sgt. Matt Vierkant, a member of Bergdahl's platoon, told CNN Bergdahl should face military trial for desertion."I was pissed off then and I am even more so now with everything going on," Vierkant said. "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him."

CNN said at least six soldiers died searching for Bergdahl in Paktika province.

 

Is it open season on kidnapping Americans then trading them for terrorists?

 

Bergdahl is a lucky fellow and I am happy for his family.

Beyond that, it appears nothing good will come from this incident, and with the loss of others looking for him, he owes a debt that can never be repaid.

 

I am conflicted about this.

I'm glad that this young man is coming home, but, from several reports and blogs that I've read (by men that served with him), this same young man sent his uniforms home, left his weapons, etc., and walked off the base.

People lost their lives, trying to find and rescue/bring back this young man.

I'll reserve other comments about the process/dealings used to 'get him back' for another time, and another place, due to the forum/subforum rules.

I hope that his return was worth the lives paid, and the high-level persons that were released that COULD cause other men and women of our military (and here, at home) their safety and possibly/probably their lives.


If it comes out that this young man 'went over the wall'.......... I say put him in a place where 5 years is just a start to his captivity.

Well, now I'm sorry for ever bringing this up.

He is big news in parts of Idaho and, since I'm from Idaho (with relatives in Hailey), it seems I got caught up in the hype and hysteria surrounding the moment...

After learning more about what he did and what the Obama administration did to, not only bring him back, but how they used it for their political gains, I am now thoroughly disgusted.

I apologize for bringing this subject up. Had I been more informed in the first place, I wouldn't have done it.

 

There's no need to apologize---I'm sure all of us felt equally glad a POW was coming home. Your heart and mind were in the right place---you just beat others to making the first comment here about this.

Sadly as more info is known to the general public it seems the conflicts concerning his actions and what potentially led to his capture are clouding just how proud an occasion this release really is.

A contributing factor to the "trade" was a severe lack of evidence to convict them of anything in a US court of law. Without proof we didn't feel keeping them any longer would lead anywhere so why not use them to some advantage?

I thoroughly agree the released terrorists were less of a security risk to the USA while at Gitmo but being a bit on the wussy side of adhering only to the rule of law concering known terrorists in our custody letting them go seemed the only choice to the higher ups. IMHO a rule of war should be followed where we don't trade or release those we know or strongly suspect will continue doing us harm.

FuryUS don't beat yourself up----it was good to bring this matter up!

 

These guys weren't just your run of the mill terrorists. 4 out of the 5 will be planning the next major terrorist attack on the U.S. or another country in no time at all. BIG BIG mistake letting them go,even bigger to make it known that the U.S. will not be the ones keeping surveillance on them.
