Super Cooling vs. Camper Special Radiator

I am new to the Ford enthusiast forums. I have read several post from a couple different forums and in my opinion this site seems to have the most credible information (no offense to the other sites).

I have a question concerning super cooling radiators and camper special radiators. These are the large 24.25"x26.25" core radiators. One radiator has large wide brackets that start off close to the same thickness of the radiator and thickens as it moves to the top of the radiator. The next has brackets that are close to the same thickness of the radiator and then has a third flange in the middle of the brackets.

I am hoping to get everyone here that reads this post on which one is which. If anyone has an OEM (not aftermarket) radiator sitting in their vehicles and wouldn't mind posting a picture it would be greatly appreciated.

Also any additional information on these radiators would be greatly appreciated. Example: is there a version for 2WD vs. 4WD? Thanks in advance.

I am a design manager at a large radiator manufacture and we have a customer that ordered a radiator (supercooling of course) and he received our rendition of the radiator you see in the picture. He is insisting that it is wrong and it is a camper special radiator. I have been here eleven years and have not had that issue with one but my OCD kicked in and I want to make sure that we still know what we are talking about. That and we want to make sure that the customer is taking care of. Thank you for the perfect picture of what I was hoping to see.

PM me or post a link of your product .. As you know ford production of this radiator stopped a long time ago .. Anybody putting a 460 in these trucks or even a diesel conversion would be interested in your product as long as it fits the radiator support in the picture above .. More then likely your customer doesn't have the correct rad support and wanted to upgrade his cooling system and didn't realize he/she needed the correct support to make it work .. You have to have the standoffs on the rad support to make the mounting work which I'm sure you already know .. Of course here on this site there are many here who have a fabrication skill set big enough to make anything work

Red,

I don't think I can post a direct link to our product here because we are not a sponsor. I have several different sizes of these radiators for these trucks. The core size are crazy as well as bracket placement. I will post to shop drawings of the super and camper units. Let me know what you think.

Really nice work ! oh and if you want to post the link cut and paste it and in the header remove the t's in http and replace them with x's we'll get it

I always thought though a 12v version of the fan design in this kick space heater running one top and bottom with the appropriate
shroud would be a much better way to cool

Jimmy, your desire to make sure you are doing your best to serve your customers is commendable and getting to be rare these days. Taking the time to register on this forum shows you have a commitment to your product and your customers. I for one would like to know the name of your company. I may be in the market for a radiator myself soon and would like to give your company and product due consideration.

Kudos to you!

I know that some of those fans used in that type of heat exchanger work well due to the higher static pressure they can operate at. The fans you see in the picture are 12" Spal and pending on the ones chosen can get upwards of 3000 cfm @ 0.3-5"h20.

If you search the numbers on the cad file you will find that these are available at Summit. I put a request in for real photos of this unit and I will post them here along with some of the other ones. We cover 20's up to the current Powerstroke units.

With that kind of coverage and commitment to your customers, you should seriously consider becoming a sponsor. Just saying.....

I have one more question for you guys regarding the smaller 19x26 core radiators. One has larger brackets built toward the engine and one has brackets toward the engine. I know that the uses call out for 2wd vs 4wd but I would like to know what the radiator is trying to miss in these applications. Thanks in advance.....

It's trying to match the angle of the motor .. Vertical plane of a OEM fan so the vertical plane of the radiator and that of the fan are parallel .. with the electric fans you have it would fit either application

This would be a good read for you

In a 4x4 the engine sits at a steeper angle in the chassis by about 1 degree. Doesn't sound like a bunch, but that is around 3/4" from the fan to the tail of the tranny. The 4x4 core support angles the radiator to match the engine angle better. The 2wd trucks with the supercooling option used the same core support as the 4x4's, but they used a different radiator. The supercool radiator will drop right in a 4x4 though

Sometime in the mid 70s ford changed radiator mounts from mid flanged to a front flange. I know I had a 76 2wd with a 460 and it was mid flanged. My 79 core support is setup for a front flanged radiator so was my dads 77.
