96 F-150 302 - Stumbling at low RPM/low throttle conditions
Greets!
Well... It appears I have a new problem with my truck. It's a 1996 Ford F-150 4x4 302 w/ EEC-V (stock mass air & ODB-II)
At low RPM (in this case... 1300-1400 rpm) under low throttle conditions (3rd gear, cruising through a flat parking lot) i notice a stumble/slight bucking - you can feel the engine power fluctuate and surge just a little. it's very minor, but it's causing a check engine light.
It only happens at low RPMs and low throttle conditions. push the throttle down, and the stumble goes away, however the motor feels a bit weak below about 2500 RPMs now...
I don't own an ODB-II scanner and i'm fairly poor right now... Does this problem ring a bell to anyone?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. If I can't get it taken care of cheap I guess I'll have to get a code scanner (or find one to borrow)
but i'm hoping this rings a bell to someone on the board ...
TIA,
-Nate

Have you changed the PCV valve recently?
Mine was plugged and I had similair condition at low speed.
There was another person that I know on this forum who had what seemed like transmission shudder between 30 and 40 mph, and once he replaced the pcv valve the shudder went away.
I hope this helps.

ah heck.. that's a good point. it's been a good 30K since i've changed the PCV valve.
Not sure why that would cause this problem, doesnt make a whole lot of sense but it is time for a change anyhow... so I shall do that tonight. i hate how that little valve is tucked away under the manifold, it's a pain to get to!
It's surely not a tranny problem.. it's a stickshift, and the tranny (and cluth) is in good working order - it's DEFINITLY an engine problem, you can hear the engine surge distinctly!
on a brighter none, I did remove all the ignition wiring and the intake piping / air meter... i make sure everything was tight and good, reset the computer, and the problem hasn't come back. I felt it surge just a little once, but no check engine light... maybe it's time to replace the wires / plugs, although they all do look good.
I'll have to drive it a few more days to see if it's gonna come back...
